SH1 Rolleston transport improvements |
20 July 2022 |
Remember to have your say by FridayThank you to everyone who has already given feedback on our plans for Rolleston. We've been really pleased with the numbers of comments coming in. People have clearly given this project a lot of thought. Talking with the community on this transport project will help to ensure we reach the best possible solution for Rolleston. A reminder: public consultation closes this Friday 22 July. We encourage you to fill out the online consultation form.

Good questions keep comingAs our team works with the Rolleston community, we regularly get questions about the project and why things are proposed a certain way. Here are some good ones: Will it be faster or slower getting from Rolleston Drive North onto the highway? Travel will generally be slower to start with but faster in the long run. Looking at current traffic volumes, it will take a little longer to go up Rolleston Drive North, over the flyover to the highway via Jones and Hoskyns Roads. However, if no changes are made, congestion and travel delays will increase as Rolleston outgrows the current traffic signals. Future traffic modelling shows the flyover will work to create capacity and reduce delays in the long-term because traffic is grade separated at this intersection. Traffic signals phasing will be optimised so travel will be as efficient as possible for people. Will the flyover be like Otira Viaduct? No, the gradient of the proposed flyover is just under 8 per cent and will feel like Prestons Bridge in Redwood. Not like Otira Viaduct in Arthurs Pass where grades are at 12 per cent. Will there be enough highway capacity through Rolleston? Traffic modelling shows the planned changes will support growth and increased traffic into the future. Rail operations will be improved. The design also preserves land for any future development opportunities. Under the proposed flyover, there will be three median barrier separated highway lanes including a southbound service lane. The service lane will allow highway traffic to safely and efficiently peel off to access Rolleston town and industrial areas, while a free-flowing southbound lane can continue through Rolleston. There will also be a free-flowing northbound lane through Rolleston, plus a free left-turn from Hoskyns Road that will form its own lane on the highway, taking traffic from residential and industrial areas to the southern motorway. While the flyover and service lane offer multiple access options into Rolleston, the primary entrance southbound is via the Weedons Interchange. The primary northbound access to Rolleston (industrial and residential areas) will be via the proposed roundabout at Dunns Crossing/Walkers Roads. We're regularly updating the Frequently Asked Questions page on our website - it's worth a read. |

Check out the Rolleston fly-through videoHave you seen the project video yet? It takes you on a virtual tour and explains a lot of the changes we are planning. The video is not exact - it's designed to give you a sense of scale and show how people will travel between the residential and industrial sides of Rolleston as well as the various highway entry and exit points. Night closures detour route Overnight finishing work on Christchurch Southern MotorwayFrom Sunday 24 July, for four nights the Christchurch Southern Motorway will be closed - two nights in each direction starting with the northbound lanes. This work will happen between 8pm and 6am, with detours and road closures signposted. The motorway will be fully open during the day.
This work is being done at night to avoid creating significant congestion. This is better for traffic flows. However, as this work involves milling, sealing and paving, it will be noisy for those living nearby. We are mindful that night work is not ideal, and we apologise for disturbing you. Thank you again for your patience. |
