The stone wall at the old entry to Manukau Memorial Gardens is being removed and will be recycled by Auckland Stonemasons - the same contractor that built the wall 30 years ago!

State Highway 20B Early Improvements Update

State Highway 20B Project Updates keep you up-to-date with project progress and upcoming physical works on State Highway 20B.

Activities last week (25 May - 1 June)

• Installation of wick drains and fence works at Manukau Memorial Gardens
• Digging out at the culvert extension and backfilling with granular material ready for drainage at Manukau Memorial Gardens
• Undercut works and backfilling between the Auckland Airport Aviation Security Gate and Campana Road
• Earthworks between Pukaki Creek Bridge and the Auckland Airport Aviation Security Gate
• Earthworks between Campana Road and Waokauri Creek Bridge
• Storm water drainage from the Auckland Airport Aviation Security Gate to Orrs Road
• Waokauri Bridge corbel works
• Site clearance at 431 Puhinui Road ready for drainage works
• Exposure of the fuel line at Campana Road, including wrapping and back-filling with sand
• Service investigation works throughout the site

• Undercut works and backfilling between the Auckland Airport Aviation Security Gate and Campana Road
• Service investigation works throughout the site

• Swale excavation
• Drainage works between Orrs Road and the Auckland Airport Aviation Security Gate
• Installing benches and wicks outside Manukau Memorial Gardens
• Excavation of the main swale west of the Manukau Memorial Gardens entrance
• Completion of the large culvert outside Manukau Memorial Gardens
• Removal and recycling of the old gates to Manukau Memorial Gardens

Activities next week (8 – 15 June)

These works are weather dependent and may be delayed.

• Earthworks and backfilling between Pukaki Creek and Waokauri Creek Bridge
• Service investigation works throughout the site
• Swale excavation
• Installation of benches and wicks outside Manukau Memorial Gardens
• Installation of a stormwater line into the swale west of Manukau Memorial Gardens
• Excavation of retaining wall footings east of Manukau Memorial Gardens
• Minor earthworks east of Waokauri Creek Bridge
• Drainage works between Orrs Road and the Auckland Airport Aviation Security Gate
• Beginning surcharge of the Campana undercut
• Finalising fuel line protection and preparing to relocate the Spark tower

Night works

Over the coming weeks there will be night works on Puhinui Road between 9pm and 4am. This work cannot be carried out during the day due to high traffic volumes and safety concerns. These works will involve truck and heavy machinery movements and noise. We will minimise disruption as much as possible and apologise in advance for any inconvenience.

• On Monday 8 June from 9pm we will be pouring concrete to form the corbels at Waokauri Creek Bridge 
•  Stop/go traffic control will be in place. Please drive carefully 

Looking ahead

• Utility services night works trenching across Puhinui Road
• Installation of an 18 tonne hollowcore bridge beam at Waokauri Bridge at night
• Barrier relocation works at night to facilitate cycle and pedestrian improvements
• Drainage works at 431 Puhinui Rd
• Continuing benches and wicks outside Manukau Memorial Gardens
• Construction of a retaining wall east of the old gates at Manukau Memorial Gardens

Safety

The speed limit for SH20B is 50km/h from Manukau Memorial Gardens to Pukaki Creek Bridge. Please drive safely and allow extra time for your journey.

Project overview

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Auckland International Airport Limited are upgrading State Highway 20B for better and more reliable travel options with a new shared path and additional priority lanes between Pukaki Creek Bridge and State Highway 20.

This project will integrate with improved transport facilities within the airport precinct along SH20B and at the upgraded Puhinui Station Interchange.

The project is the first step of the Southwest Gateway programme to provide better public transport, walking and cycling facilities with safer and more efficient freight movements to, from and around Southwest Auckland.

Key early improvements on State Highway 20B to be delivered by 2021 include:

• A safe place for people to walk and ride bikes
• Safety improvements including central median barrier protection, improved lighting and a reduced speed
• Improved pavement, drainage and stormwater treatment
• Two improved intersections at Campana Road and Manukau Memorial Gardens.
