Ian Austin Author March 2022 newsletter Welcome What's new? Here we go with our very first newsletter, designed to keep you up to date with all things Ian and the latest regarding his thrilling books. It’s going to be a seasonal publication, as Ian knows what it’s like to receive a barrage of stuff sometimes only to find a small proportion is of real interest. He wants the newsletter to be an easy and enjoyable read providing all the details of Ian's current writing as well as updates on his latest release Bonded and the preceding books too. No newsletter about Ian would be complete without references to his Police past as well, which we know is of great interest to lots of you crime readers and would be detectives. Ian will be sharing his wealth of career experiences too, so strap yourselves in for anything from the hilarious to the harrowing in each and every seasonal edition. No rest for the wickedAlmost as soon as Bonded was finished Ian was into writing the next chapter of the Dan Calder series. The new book is without a title as yet, but Ian can tell you it's a prequel. Just how far back in time it's set is a secret for now..... The life of a PolicemanI was lucky enough to revisit an old Police job a couple of weeks ago when I went to Albany on Auckland's North Shore to see prize winner Pamela Cusack at the Little Steps Montessori School and spend half an hour talking with and to a class of 3 to 5 year old's. I told them a little about being a Policeman. They especially enjoyed the helmet, truncheon and handcuffs as you can see! Few jobs could have me visiting with an infants school after breakfast, delivering a death message at lunchtime, investigating burglaries and robberies through dinner and finishing the night fighting with a drunk at supper. In the early part of my career as a uniformed Constable I was a local beat officer, designated to patrol a particular neighbourhood. I developed relationships with local residents, businesses and schools etc. and conducted school visits to speak to pupils about policing and life. It was a great foundation in those early years and one I still value today. Everybody has their own story and we shouldn’t take for granted what a persons behaviour is motivated by. Nowadays all that experience inspires the building of characters in my writing, meaning the apparently least interesting person could really have the most interesting story waiting to be discovered. Looking aheadIt's my plan to go to the UK in April but Covid is still dominating the decision as to if and when exactly. I'd love to be there around the time my newest grandchild arrives and I'll be doing all I can to make that happen. It's the only downside of being on the other side of the world to my two daughters but the world can be a small place these days with all the different options to stay in touch. My family are the real inspiration for me to write the books I do. I love the idea of one day, my granddaughter taking her children to the library or bookshop and pointing to a shelf and saying, “That’s what your great Grandad wrote.” If we don’t try to leave the world in a slightly better position than we found it in, or at least try to make a positive impact, what’s the point?
