NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is about to begin installing traffic lights at Bombay Interchange at the following locations:

  • The Bombay southbound off-ramp intersection with Mill Road
  • The Bombay northbound off-ramp and on-ramp intersection with Mill Road
  • The Bombay service centre exit on Mill Road.

Background

Traffic volumes on Mill Road in and around Bombay Interchange have meant that motorists wanting to turn right at these three locations can experience significant delays, causing queues to back up (including onto the motorway itself) and leading to motorist frustration and instances of unsafe driving behaviour.

Installing traffic lights is the most appropriate short-term solution available for the issues affecting the interchange and the adjacent Bombay service centre. In the longer term, there are plans to upgrade Bombay Interchange including widening the Mill Road overbridge across SH1 and its approaches each side to four lanes.

Traffic lights now, in advance of that longer term upgrade, will provide immediate and significant safety benefits for motorists using the interchange and service centre and will enable NZTA to manage queue lengths on the southbound off-ramp to prevent them backing up onto the motorway.

What work is happening?

This project will take approximately 6 months to complete with an anticipated start date of Sunday 8th September 2024.

The scope of work for the project includes:

  • Roadway widening and kerb line extension
  • Traffic island installation
  • Traffic lights installation
  • Road marking and new signs
  • Mechanical work for traffic signals (underground ducting etc)
  • New paving and line marking at the end of the project.

How might this work affect you?

  • Work hours will generally be between 7pm and 5am Sunday to Thursday nights.
  • The majority of the project works will be done at night, however some day works are scheduled. We will update the community as to when this will happen.
  • Traffic control will be in place during work hours. This will vary between lane closures, two-way stop/go controls and detours.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained during the project. There may be times where foot traffic is detoured to keep everyone safe. Please follow all posted signage.
  • Construction works will create noise, vibration, and dust. We will endeavour to keep disruption to a minimum.
  • Please plan your journeys ahead of time.
