Pepe Stream Bridge replacement project update

Story
Story

We are wrapping up the business case work for the Pepe Stream Bridge replacement project. We would like to say a big a thank you to all those who have reached out to us, came along to an open day, or completed our online survey.
All the information gathered has been very useful and has been considered in our business case.

What you told us

It was fantastic to have so many people take the time to share their thoughts with us firstly on what was important to them in a new bridge and later, on the three bridge replacement options and intersection options we shared with the community.

Overall, throughout the consultation phase of the project we received more than 1000 pieces of feedback.

  • 912 via an online survey
  • 132 at the public open day held at the Tairua School
  • 32 online submissions

The majority of feedback was supportive of option one – a two-lane bridge with an attached walking and wheeling pathway and of a roundabout and raised pedestrian crossing to improve the State Highway 25 and Pepe Road intersection.

Those who provided feedback also told us it was important to consider how we can make a future bridge safe for recreational activities and made suggestions on how we could improve pedestrian access to the bridge and manage vehicle speeds and volume in the town centre.

You can view the summary of feedback here.

What's next?

Funding for pre-implementation (consenting, property and design phases of a project) has been allocated within the 2021-24 National Land Transport Programme (NLTP). Once the business case has been completed and approved, Waka Kotahi will need to undertake an internal process to uplift the funding.

Funding for construction is possible within the 2021-24 NLTP period, if more funding becomes available. We will continue to work with Thames Coromandel District Council and the Tairua community to ensure this project is well placed if more funding becomes available in 2021-24, and to help ensure it is in the best position for funding in the 2024-27 NLTP.
