Plant health and using biological controls within peat-free growing media

In the innovative world of horticulture, the marriage of two environmentally conscious practices, peat-free growing media and biological controls, are revolutionising how we grow plants. Incorporating peat-free growing media signifies a significant step towards more sustainable horticulture.

However, growing in peat-free media presents its own challenges, including nutrient imbalances and susceptibility to pests; this is where the utilisation of biological controls comes into play. These beneficial organisms not only help overcome the challenges posed by peat-free media but also enhance the vitality and resilience of the plants, offering a symbiotic solution that marries environmental sustainability with robust plant growth.

Click the link below to find out more about the role of biological controls and how to get better responses from them within peat-free growing media.

Now is the time to apply nematodes for the control of soil dwelling pests

The larval stages of several of soil-dwelling pests including vine weevil, chafer grubs, wireworms and leatherjackets can cause considerable damage to plant roots and tubers, resulting in decreased plant vigour, crop damage and plant death.

Targeting with nematodes at the correct life stage is key to effectively controlling populations and keeping your plants safe from these hidden pests.

Depending on climatic temperatures and pest species, Fargro offers a variety of nematodes to seek out soil-dwelling pests.
