Project update - End of Year Newsletter

Tēnā koe and welcome to the Northland Corridor newsletter.

This is the last edition of the newsletter for 2025. After a very busy year for the team, we will be taking a short break over the summer between 23 December and 12 January. There’s more information on our holiday shut down dates below. Meetings with landowners in the priority section of the preferred route, the Alternative to the Brynderwyn Hills, will resume in mid-January. We’ll also be in touch in the new year with landowners between Waipu and Whangārei with details on how to book in individual meeting with the team.

Read on for our state highway network summer travel information, including some safe driving tips over the holidays.

We wish you and your families a safe and happy holiday season.

Project team summer shut down dates

We’ll be taking a short break between 23 December and 12 January 2026. During this time the email and project phone number will not be monitored.

If your query is urgent or relates to the wider network, please phone the NZTA call centre on 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49).

Geotechnical investigations

This has been a huge year for the geotechnical team. Geotechnical investigations are part of the work we do to help us refine the route into the proposed designation. This year to date, we have drilled 360 boreholes with a whopping 15,000 metres drilled in total!

Next year we’ll be moving further North along the corridor as we continue our investigations.

Information for landowners

If you are a landowner in the Alternative to the Brynderwyn Hils section, and you haven’t made a booking with us, please email us at northlandproject@nzta.govt.nz or phone us on 0800 927 293.

Please get in touch with the project team before our Christmas shut down on 23 December or in the new year after 12 January if you have any questions.

If you are a landowner in the preferred corridor between Waipu and Whangārei, we will be in touch again in the new year with details of how to book in your individual meeting with the team.

So that we can contact landowners as quickly and efficiently as possible, we want to make sure we have all the contact details of landowners who may be potentially affected. If you have received a letter from us advising that your property is within the preferred route, please register your contact details. Instructions on how to register your contact details are provided in your letter.

It is quick and easy to register via the online form and only takes about one minute.

Ara Tuhono – Warkworth to Te Hana

Procurement for the project as a Public Private Partnership (PPP) is progressing well. NZTA will be moving into the negotiation stage after the evaluation of proposals is complete at the end of March 2026, with the contract expected to be awarded by end of July 2026. The successful PPP consortia is expected to start detailed design and early construction works by the end of next year.

During construction, the PPP contractor will be responsible for meeting the noise and vibration conditions and managing the impacts.

Here’s some more information on how noise and vibration is managed during construction.

  • Allow plenty of time and expect delays at peak travel periods
  • Drive to the conditions – whether it’s the weather, the road, the traffic, or the time of day
  • Take breaks – share the driving and stop regularly
  • Avoid distractions and put the phone away
  • Buckle up – every trip, every seat
  • Be patient – you’re on holiday, there’s no need to sleigh the speed limit
