Halswell Road/Aidanfield Drive intersection: first stage of asphalt paving

Kia ora

We’re just about to reach a project milestone with the completion of the Aidanfield Drive intersection later this month, subject to weather.

The lights will be switched on, right turns restored into Halswell Road from Aidanfield Drive and vice versa, and anyone walking, cycling, or scooting will be able to safely cross Aidanfield Drive at the lights and use the completed northbound shared path between Aidanfield Drive and Augustine Drive.

Also, the number 60 bus route will be able to use Aidanfield Drive in both directions.

A day or two before the lights are turned on, you might notice the lights flashing orange for about an hour while we check and test the operation of the lights.

We’ll do the final surfacing of the intersection and paint the line markings at the end of April so that we can do the longest stretch of surfacing in one go. This is likely to take 2 or 3 days, and we’ll need to close Aidanfield Drive during this time. We’ll let you know more about this closer to the time.

Completion of the intersection will help with site access to the eastern side of the intersection for the development planned for that land.

Hendersons Road
We’ll be working at the Hendersons Road intersection from next Monday (24 March) for about 8 weeks, installing new kerb and channel, footpaths and building the new road. As this work requires a full road closure there won’t be any access onto Hendersons Road from Halswell Road and vice versa. Please use the sign posted detour routes via Monsaraz Boulevard /Manarola Road.

Sharing the road and speed
Please remember to share the road with everyone using it. The lanes are too narrow to safely pass cyclists. Give them the space they need and while they may not be going at 30km/h, be patient, this will only add a few seconds to your journey time.

We appreciate the 30k/h speed limit through the project area can be frustrating. It’s there to help keep everyone using the road safe, including our crews. In bad weather it may be appropriate to reduce your speed further.

Thank you for your patience.

What else is happening?

You may have noticed how busy we are with crews working at several locations along the project area.

We’re focusing on getting as much of the new road built as possible before winter. Road sealing needs a minimum air temperature, which we only get during the warmer months. Over the winter, we’ll continue across the project area on work that doesn’t need to be sealed.

As we finish work in one place and start in another, there will be changes in the way we manage the traffic.

The timing of the changes is dependent on the weather. To make planning your journey easier keep a look out for information about any changes on the advanced warning signs.

Increasing resilience – work near the Curletts Road/Hoon Hay Road intersection and right turn changes

As part of the project, we’re upgrading some key utility services on the southbound side of the road in 2 metre deep trenches approaching the Curletts Road/Hoon Hay Road intersection.

We’re increasing resilience by replacing old clay sewer pipes, dating back to the 1950s, with new 150mm diameter PVC pipes. We're also installing 750mm diameter concrete stormwater pipes where there were none previously.

To do this work safely, we had to remove the right turn into Hoon Hay Road from Halswell Road.

Right turns can still be made at Lyttelton Street off Lincoln Road, and we’ve reopened Rowley Avenue to traffic.

Other work in the project area

Installation of the new traffic lights at the Rowley Avenue intersection is going well: the foundations are finished, the cables are laid, and over the last couple of months, we have rebuilt the road.

From Monday last week, for about 6 weeks, we’re back working at the Tankerville Road intersection and access won’t be possible into or out of Halswell Road. We’ll be installing the remaining kerb and channel, footpaths and building the new road.

One of our challenges is working close to other services that are already in the ground. To solve this, we’re installing shared utility trenches between Dunbars Road and Aidanfield Drive which will become home for the many different cables and services along this stretch of Halswell Road. They’ll all be in one location, limiting potential disruption during construction as well as making it easier to carry out any maintenance work in the future.

You can turn up and go on Metro’s Bus Route 7 from 28 April

Metro’s Route 7 Halswell-Queenspark service is now set to become even more convenient. Thanks to an increase in frequency the Route 7 Halswell-Queenspark service will run every 10 minutes from 5.30am to 6.30pm on weekdays and every 15 minutes outside those hours from Monday 28 April.

With an additional 5 buses added to service the route, taking the bus just got a whole lot easier, with average wait times reduced to 5 minutes. Taking the bus is a great way to catch-up on the latest podcast, read a book or even get in some early work emails instead of sitting in traffic!

Route 7 is a convenient way to get to Ngā Puna Wai, Hillmorton and Christchurch Hospitals, the Palms and upcoming developments such as the Parakiore Recreation and Sports Centre in the city.
For more information about Route 7 email metro@ecan.govt.nz or phone 03 366 88 55.

Environment Canterbury’s changes to the Metro Route 7 bus service, together with the Christchurch City Council’s planned infrastructure upgrades and the new bus lanes we’re building, are part of a wider programme to improve local access to public transport.
