Fall 2023 Registration Deadline
Grad students who have still not registered for the fall semester, the deadline is fast approaching.
Please register by Sept. 19 to access supports and resources available to registered students including funding opportunities.

Thesis Deadline for Fall 2023 Graduation
Graduate students who have not electronically submitted their final thesis copy to FGPA by Sept. 19 will not be eligible to graduate in fall 2023 and must register for the fall 2023 term.

Carleton University PhD students Hannah Johnston (Information Technology) and Evan Wicklund (Sociology) are the recipients of a prestigious 2023 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.

Valued at $50,000 per year for three years during a student’s doctoral studies, the coveted Vanier scholarships are awarded to Canadian PhD students who conduct exceptional research.

Sept. 12, 2023
Last day for registration and course changes (including auditing) in early fall courses.

Sept. 13, 2023
OSAP deferral deadline.

Sept. 19, 2023

  • Last day for registration and course changes (including auditing) in full fall, late fall, and fall/winter courses.
  • Last day to withdraw from early fall courses with a full fee adjustment (financial withdrawal).
  • Graduate students who have not electronically submitted their final thesis copy to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs will not be eligible to graduate in fall 2023.

Sept. 22-24, 2023
Full and late summer deferred final examinations held.

Sept. 30, 2023
Last day to withdraw from full fall term and fall/winter courses with a full fee adjustment (financial withdrawal).

Carleton Researchers Awarded $1.24M in CFI JELF Funding

The Canada Foundation for Innovation’s John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF) is a critical strategic investment tool designed to help institutions attract and retain top researchers. This year, 13 Carleton researchers have been awarded a combined total of $1.24M for their groundbreaking projects.

Senate Call for Committee Nominations for Grad Students

The Carleton University Senate is calling for nominations for  graduate students to serve on a variety of Senate Standing Committees. Students will serve for a one-year term from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024. Once the deadline for nominations (March 31, 2023) has passed, positions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, provided the nominee meets eligibility requirements.

Students may serve on Senate committees without having been previously elected to a governance position.

Get Familiar with Library Services for Grad Students

On Sept. 14, 2023 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. the MacOdrum Library and Graduate Students Association will be hosting a joint event for graduate students to familiarize themselves with the services the Library has to offer and to get to meet the people behind those services.

There will be a chance to listen to presentations (in-person and virtual) as well as visit booths in person and ask your questions about how we can help support your time here.

We will have presentations on:

  • Searching and finding resources

  • Introduction to library services

  • Conducting a literature review

  • Citation management tools

  • Scholarly Publishing

And in-person only, you will be able to chat with those of us that support Maps/Geographic, Information System (GIS), Quantitative data & Research Data Management (RDM), Scholarly Communications/Copyright, Knowledge Synthesis, Citation, Book Arts, and User Services.

TA Central Hub!

If you are a Teaching Assistant (TA) or just starting as one, join the TA Central Hub!

To be enrolled, please email us and gain access to our Brightspace learning portal for TAs to watch pre-recorded training videos, access resource materials and share resources related to teaching. 

TA Basics 101 Workshops
We encourage all new TAs to register and attend one of these sessions. This
workshop session is offered several times throughout September and will provide a firm foundation for being a successful teaching assistant.

Mitacs Elevate Program - Apply Anytime!

The Mitacs Elevate Program, open to all disciplines, is now open year-round for new submissions from Carleton post-doctoral fellows.

Post-doctoral fellows will manage a long-term collaborative research project with a company or not-for-profit organization. The intern will spend approximately 50% of their time conducting research at Carleton and 50% interacting with the partner organization. Postdoctoral fellows can apply for 1 – 2 years of funding valued at $60,000/year in any discipline, with $30,000 coming from the partner organization.

Carleton’s Women in Engineering & IT Program Returns to Bridge the Gender Gap

We are thrilled to announce the return of Carleton University's Women in Engineering and IT Program! The program is one of the first of its kind in Canada, aimed to help close the gender gap in STEM. Women students studying engineering or information technology (or a related field) are welcome to join the program, which runs every academic year.

Backed by 20 leading industry and government partners, the program offers women mentorship, networking, and soft-skill development opportunities; a study lounge and access to a resume book.

Navigating the Canadian Workplace Workshop Series

Are you looking for a job in Canada but aren’t sure where to begin? Are you thinking about working in Canada in the near future and looking for resources to answer some of your questions? Navigating the Canadian Workplace is a workshop series designed to support international students, and students who are newcomers to Canada, as you explore strategies for finding work and transition into the Canadian workplace.

Workshop topics include:

  • Beginning Your Job Search and Building Your Resume
  • Canadian Workplace Culture
  • Introduction to the Canadian Hiring Process
  • What to Expect in a Job Interview
  • Transitioning into the Canadian Workplace

This workshop series will be offered both in-person and online for fall 2023.

In-person workshops will run Tuesdays from Sept. 19 to Oct. 17, 2023 from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

If you prefer to do this workshop fully online, you can sign up for the asynchronous, self-directed workshop series where you can complete the individual workshops online at your own pace. For this option, you will have from Sept. 19 to Nov. 24, 2023 to complete the workshops.

Northern Map Turtles Survive Cold Winter Conditions by Staying Active Under Ice

Imagine it’s winter, and you’re standing on a frozen lake or pond, when suddenly below your feet you notice hundreds of turtles. What are they doing down there below the ice?

Freshwater turtles in temperate regions like Canada spend several months of the year braced against frigid winter conditions of temperatures around or below 0 C and the formation of ice on water bodies.

For all eight species of freshwater turtles in Canada, this ice barrier—and more importantly the liquid water below it—is a refuge from the freezing temperatures above. While ice coverage protects these turtles from the harsh cold, it also presents them with a challenge: restricted access to atmospheric oxygen.
