In Gonzalez v. Google, SCOTUS Considers Section 230

In a case set to be heard by the Supreme Court this term, the highest court will consider Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA) for the first time in the law’s quarter-century history. Gonzalez v. Google LLC was one of nine new cases added to the Supreme Court’s docket on October 3, 2022.

Section 230, the 1996 provision aimed fostering the development of the Internet and avoiding a chilling effect on speech, grants Internet platforms broad immunity against liability for content published by others. As the capabilities and functionalities of Internet services plunge further and further afield from what could be imagined in the last decade of the twentieth century, the Supreme Court’s determination in Gonzalez v. Google could radically retool tech companies’ ironclad immunity under Section 230.

The question of whether Section 230 covers targeted recommendations or only traditional editorial functions stands to overhaul the legal landscape for any Internet service that hosts user-generated content. NRB will continue to monitor the proceeding of Gonzalez as the Supreme Court’s 2022-2023 term unfolds.

Thousands Rally at Tennessee State Capitol to “End Child Mutilation”

One month after conservative commentator Matt Walsh sounded the alarm on Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s (VUMC) profit-driven zeal for so-called “gender-affirming” healthcare, thousands of concerned citizens gathered at the War Memorial Plaza in downtown Nashville for the “Rally to End Child Mutilation,” hosted by Walsh and the Daily Wire on October 21, 2022.

Within view of the Tennessee State Capitol, a slate of high-profile headliners addressed an audience of around 3,000 people. Speakers included U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), state lawmakers Sen. Jack Johnson (R-Franklin) and House majority leader William Lamberth (R-Portland), former U.S. representative and 2020 presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard; president of Convention of States Action Mark Meckler; former congressional candidate Robby Starbuck; founder of Trans Rational Educational Voices Scott Newgent; evolutionary biologist, journalist, and founding editor of Reality’s Last Stand Dr. Colin Wright; eighteen-year-old former “trans kid” Chloe Cole; and NRB member Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) general counsel Christiana Kiefer.
