Shifting Paul Matthews Road intersection

Work is well underway to extend Paul Matthews Road and shift it to join Caribbean Drive.

Traffic was recently moved to a new lane layout at Caribbean Drive. New driveway entrances and a shared path are under construction. Asphalt is being laid on the extended Paul Matthews Road, along with new walking and cycling paths. A number of new traffic lights have also appeared.

The upgraded intersection and new road are on track to open by the end of the year. When this happens, the existing SH18/Paul Matthews Road intersection will close altogether.

New bridge at Constellation Station

A new pedestrian bridge was lifted into place at the Constellation Bus Station over Labour Weekend.  The 28 metre long transparent glass bridge will provide a safe connection between the new northbound platform and the station hub. This is similar to the layout at Smales Farm Station.

Work on the $15M station upgrade includes a new northbound platform, toilets, lifts, driver facilities and a kiosk area.  It is scheduled to be completed in mid 2021.

Dotterels find a nest

Throughout the project we have spotted the native New Zealand dotterel in various locations. The dotterel can be attracted to our sites due to the large areas of flat, cleared ground giving them good visibility of potential threats. The birds are considered to be at risk from predators such as rats and cats, as well as a loss of habitat.

In areas where we could not afford for work to stop, measures were put in place to deter them from nesting, such as low fences. A nesting pair of dotterels would result in work coming to a stop in the immediate area, until the chicks had hatched and left the nest.

Currently we have a nesting pair of dotterels within one of our recently completed wetlands. We have made the area a no go zone for all work and people. We will keep an eye on them from a distance to hopefully see the successful hatching of their eggs!
