May 2021

Kia ora koutou,

On 16 April 2021, Waka Kotahi and Auckland Airport achieved a major milestone with the opening of an improved State Highway 20B (SH20B). This does not mean that the project is fully completed but some further works still need to be done.

Asphalting the road has been one of the major tasks in the past few weeks. The winter nights have not slowed down our progress. The night works have involved the removal of the existing surface layer with a milling machine, laying a foundation (chip seal), applying asphalt then finishing off with line marking.

On 25 May another milestone was achieved with the completion of laying all the asphalt on SH20B. With an average of 10 tonnes per six wheeler truck load for a total of 7016 tonnes!

We have also been working on the wire rope barrier foundations, landscaping and stormwater installation while completing fence installation and tidying up on the smaller jobs on the site.

Introducing Dushyant Meditarra

Story
Story

As a contract planner, Dushyant brings in a wide range of experience to ensure the timely delivery of the project. He has previously been involved in the Northern Corridor Improvements, Drury South wetland project and the rapid concrete trial for the Auckland Airport.

In July 2020 Dushyant has been appointed as a night shift engineer to install drainage, carry out ducting work and lay close to 60,000 tonnes of asphalt throughout the site.

"The biggest challenge for night shift was the weather! Cold, gritty, gloomy and sometimes stormy," says Dushyant. "The winter season can be unforgiving and unpredictable but a few months in, we all settled in well. The banter onsite isn’t too bad either!"

With the team close to finishing the concrete works, Dushyant and the team are firing full steam ahead to complete the project by August 2021.

Story

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Auckland International Airport Limited are upgrading State Highway 20B for better and more reliable travel options with a new shared path and additional priority lanes between Pukaki Creek Bridge and State Highway 20.

This project will integrate with improved transport facilities within the airport precinct along SH20B and at the upgraded Puhinui Station Interchange.

The project is the first step of the Southwest Gateway programme to provide better public transport, walking and cycling facilities with safer and more efficient freight movements to, from and around Southwest Auckland.

Fulton Hogan undertakes this work on behalf of Waka Kotahi.

Key early improvements on State Highway 20B to be delivered by 2021 include:

  • A safe place for people to walk and ride bikes
  • Safety improvements including central median barrier protection, improved lighting and a reduced speed
  • Improved pavement, drainage and stormwater treatment
  • Two improved intersections at Campana Road and Manukau Memorial Gardens.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency works to create transport solutions for all New Zealanders – from helping new drivers earn their licences, to leading safety campaigns to investing in public transport, state highways and local roads.
