Map showng oversized vehicle movements as part of the Kaiwaikawe Wind Farm project

Overnight oversized load movements for Mercury NZ’s Kaiwaikawe Wind Farm project

Over the next few months, regular oversized loads carrying wind turbine components will be moving on our state highway network overnight from Northport to the Kaiwaikawe Wind Farm site. They will be travelling in convoys between Sunday to Thursday nights to minimise impacts on daytime traffic. To avoid morning peak congestion, trucks will return to Northport along the same route after 9.30am.

The route is Northport to SH15, SH1 through Whangārei, SH14 to Dargaville, then SH12 to the wind farm site.
The loads include tower sections, blades and other parts that require specialised transporters, pilot vehicles and coordinated traffic management.

Travellers at night may experience intermittent delays as convoys move through. Oversized vehicles may travel slowly, take wider turns or temporarily block the road while manoeuvring. Pilot vehicles will lead and follow convoys to help manage movements and communicate with road users.

If you’re travelling overnight:

  • allow extra time for your journey
  • look out for pilot vehicles and the OVERSIZE sign
  • slow down and follow instructions from pilot and traffic management staff
  • be prepared to stop if directed – extremely large loads may temporarily block the road
  • only overtake when signalled it is safe to do so

There has been a lot of behind the scenes planning between Mercury Energy, the NZTA Maintenance and Operations team, bridge engineers, the NZ Police Commercial Vehicle Safety, and specialist transport load pilot crews to ensure these works are delivered as smoothy and safety as possible.

For general information on how oversized loads operate on New Zealand roads, the NZ Heavy Haulage Association provides helpful videos

NZTA thanks road users and local communities for their patience and cooperation while these movements take place, and for helping keep everyone safe around oversized vehicles.
