Kia ora

Welcome to the latest update from the Tākaka Hill repairs team.

With COVID-19 delaying some works, two further 5-night road closures are needed to keep us on target to achieve two lanes open by the end of the year.

Following is the work we've completed during October:

  • Site 6 - The retaining wall is now complete. Paving will be laid and guardrail. constructed in the November/December planned night road closures.
  • Site 7 - Complete, with line marking still to be undertaken.
  • Site 9 - Complete, with line marking still to be undertaken.
  • Site 11 – Retaining wall is complete, surfacing will be laid and guardrail constructed in the November/December planned night road closures.
  • Site 13 - Retaining wall is complete, pavement and barrier construction still to be undertaken.

The images below give you a glimpse into the progress being made beneath the road - which is not always visible when you're driving.

You'll find more information below about the upcoming night closures so you can plan ahead.

Plan ahead for two 5-night road closures

November 22-27, from 9pm to 5am each weekday night
This planned closure is to complete paving and remaining wall works across all sites.

December 6-11, from 9pm to 5am each weekday night
This planned closure is to complete road marking and remaining surface works.

These works are weather dependant.

For safety reasons, and to minimise disruption to road users, this work must be done at night.

These are the final intended night road closures.

If you need access over the hill for night work or essential commitments, please email takakahill@nzta.govt.nz or call Kane Reihana on 027 886 4508. We will do our best to accommodate your needs, however we cannot guarantee access.

Access is always available for emergency services throughout the closure.

Resilient

Site 7 has been prepared with high drainage capacity to protect against future flood events. Precast panels and rip-rap (large rocks) protect from further rain events scouring the site.

This view of Site 7 shows the different elements that have gone into building this site: foundations, gabion walls and baskets, large scale drainage, rip-rap (large rocks) stream base, capping beam, and new road formation.
