Ngaree Ah Kit Media Release Housing deal paves the way for new homes in Tennant Creek27 July 2024 People in need of safe, secure and affordable housing in Tennant Creek will benefit from the construction of 12 new homes thanks to a $6.9 million partnership between the Territory Labor Government, the Commonwealth Government, Housing Australia and Venture Housing Company. The housing, which will be a mix of social and affordable homes, will be delivered across three adjoining sites. The homes will be available for older women at risk of homelessness, women and children fleeing domestic and family violence, and Aboriginal people who are eligible for social or affordable housing. Community Housing Provider Venture Housing is developing the 12 two-bedroom homes. It is also contributing land and $1.5 million towards the project development costs. This is supported by a joint $1.9 million grant from the Territory Labor and Commonwealth governments under the Barkly Regional Deal; an additional capital grant of $500,000 from the Territory Labor Government; and a $3 million grant from Housing Australia. This is the first Northern Territory-targeted grant Housing Australia is funding via the National Housing Infrastructure Facility Fund for Social and Affordable Housing to support the development of more homes in the Northern Territory. The transition of delivery and management of social and affordable housing to Community Housing Providers was announced as part of the Northern Territory Community Housing Growth Strategy 2022–32. The strategy aims to transform the way housing in the Northern Territory is delivered by providing targeted, sector-led housing services, contributing to community renewal, and attracting non-government investment in social and affordable housing. The homes are expected to be completed by February 2025.
