Raised crossings are a Safe System improvement

The design of the St Lukes cycleway safety improvements includes raised tables at three crossings on the St Lukes overbridge. Raised table crossings make it safer for people on foot and on bikes to cross the road by slowing traffic down in the left turning lanes. They are in line with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency’s commitment to the Safe System approach, designing roads that are more forgiving.

First stage of off-ramp complete

Over the weekend we poured the first of the four raised crossings to be installed as part of the project. Excavation was completed on Friday night, the concrete was poured on Saturday morning, and was left to cure until Sunday night. Then the traffic management was removed and the left turn from the offramp into St Lukes Road was reinstated.

Good progress continues

We made good progress on the St Lukes Road footpath over the weekend pouring the concrete for about half the length of the footpath – the footpath design has separate sections for people on foot and on bikes.

Excavation at the intersection of Duncan Maclean Link and St Lukes Road intersections also got underway and and we finished the first stage. This will allow us to install new kerbs in a slightly different position to the old ones this week.

We plan to build the raised table crossings at Duncan Maclean Link in the coming weekend.

Weekend of Friday 7 to Monday 10 February

The two raised crossings in Duncan Maclean Link and one at the junction of Great North Road and St Lukes Road will be the focus of work on the weekend beginning 7 February. Work will start at 9pm on Friday 7 and go through to 5am on Monday 10. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the overnight works. We do our best to do the noisy works during the day but this is not always possible.

Building the raised crossings in Duncan Maclean Link will require a complete closure of the road between Western Springs Road and St Lukes Road. Access for residents in this short section will be maintained.

Detours will be in place for:

  • traffic which cannot turn into Duncan Maclean Link from St Lukes Road
  • local residents travelling to and from Great North Road from Duncan Maclean Link. The detour will use Mountain View, Ivanhoe, Wexford, and Tuarangi Roads.

No detours are required for the work on the raised crossing at Great North Road.

Monday 10 to Friday 14 February day and night shifts

Work will continue in Duncan Maclean Link in the week beginning Monday 10 February with the closures and detours from the weekend continuing.

There will also be night-time work on the westbound on-ramp. This will mean the closure of the left turn onto the on-ramp from St Lukes Road.

Traffic wanting to access SH16 westbound will be detoured on Great North Road to Waterview. There they can access SH16 westbound and the Waterview Tunnel.
