New project work - water main and some additional tree removals

Kia ora koutou

We’re getting ready to upgrade the water main (pipe) along Halswell Road, between Templetons Road and Curletts Road, with work starting next month. The new, larger pipe will increase capacity, reduce water loss from leaks, and strengthen the network’s resilience for the future.

We’ve partnered with Christchurch City Council to help deliver this upgrade as part of a wider effort to improve infrastructure in the area. By installing the council’s new water main at the same time as our other work, we’re saving time, reducing disruption, and keeping the road in better shape for longer.

Like other services, we’ll install the new pipe under the footpath and grass berm instead of under the road. This will make it easier to repair and maintain in the future without having to dig up the new road. This also means we need to remove some of the trees along the north/city bound side of this section of road.

We know how important trees are to the community and haven’t made this decision lightly. We’ve consulted a qualified arborist so we can retain as many trees as possible. However, we have had to balance it with the need to provide a reliable long term means of supplying water to homes in the area.

We’ll start to remove the trees from Monday 16 June. The work should take about a week to complete.

You can find out more about this including why we’re putting in a new water main and replacement trees in the works notice, which was delivered to properties between Templetons Road and Curletts Road earlier this week, here.

Speed and extreme weather

Thanks to everyone who has been keeping to the 30k/h speed limit through the project area. With the heavy rain we experience it may be appropriate to reduce your speed further.
Please remember to share the road with everyone and give cyclists the space they need.

Read on to find out more about what’s happening on the project.

Keep warm and safe travels.

Between Tankerville Road and Curletts Road

Progress along this section of the road is taking longer than anticipated. Our crews had to stop work on installing the new stormwater system and building the new road in early April after we discovered a concrete slab buried over the top of existing communication ducts and in the path of where we were working.

Following a massive relocation of cables and ducts our crews returned to the area in mid-May. We’re now working on safely removing the concrete slab.

This will enable the remaining stormwater system to be installed, the new road to be built, and the road surfaced in this section. It will also allow traffic flow to be returned to the normal side of the traffic island at the Curletts/Hoon Hay intersection.

Section of shared path open

Good news for people walking and cycling - the shared path between Aidanfield Drive and Augustine Drive (on the northbound side of the road) is open giving cyclists an off-road option along this section of the road. This will be extended later this month when we expect to open the shared path down to Dunbars Road.

Other work

Last month, we relocated the traffic lane and barriers along Halswell Road, between 143 Halswell Road and Tankerville Road. Traffic travelling along this section of Halswell Road switched from driving on the west side of the road, to driving on the east side.

The switch was so we could start work on the northbound lane with most of the work completed on the southbound lane.

We expect to switch the traffic lane and barriers along the next section of Halswell Road from 143 Halswell Road to Hendersons Road later this month.

We finished installing new kerb and channel, footpaths and building the new road at the Hendersons Road intersection at the end of last month.

We are continuing to build the new road, working in small sections along the road to minimise the length of time we impact each property.

Road safety week at Halswell School

Together with Christchurch City Council, Brake (a road safety charity), consultancy Beca, and our contractor Fulton Hogan we visited Halswell School last month during Road Safety Week to teach some of the younger students about road safety and taking care travelling through road works. It was lots of fun. Half the visit was spent inside reading the book ‘My Mum is Queen of the Road’. The other half was outside with the opportunity to climb on and explore a roading truck and operate temporary traffic lights which was very popular.

Can we help?

Please contact Fulton Hogan on 0800 ROAD FH (0800 7623 34) Monday to Friday, 8am - 5pm, or email cant.info@fultonhogan.com, to discuss any specific access needs such as nurse/doctor visits or Meals on Wheels deliveries to your property.

Contact us at anytime if the matter is urgent.
