Waihoehoe Road upgrade project update

8 December 2023

He pānui | Project newsletter

This issue provides information about geotechnical work at Drury Village planned for next week.

Geotechnical investigations

From 7AM-9PM between Monday 11 and Friday 15 December we will be undertaking geotechnical investigations in the car parking area at Drury Village (232 Great South Road).

Drury Village businesses will be open as usual.

We aim to minimise disruption where possible and finish earlier if we can.

The geotechnical investigations are necessary for us to understand the ground conditions to help with developing the designs for the Waihoehoe Road upgrade.

What are the impacts for the community?

A safety fence will be put up around the work area.

Several car parking spaces next to the businesses will be unavailable so that there is room for geotechnical machinery and support vehicles. If you're unable to find a car parking space next to the businesses, there is alternative parking in Tui Street.

Will this work be noisy?

This work does generate noise. You can expect noise above 70dB during the penetration test.

People indoors will hear sharp noises once every 15 mins for the first two to three hours but this is not loud enough to damage hearing.

What type of geotechnical work is this?

Two types of work will be carried out to measure the strength and properties of the soil.

Machine borehole drilling - A drill rig mounted on a tractor or tracks will take a continuous core of soil or rock, and a second truck will be used to carry water and equipment.

Cone penetration test – A hole will be drilled using a portable rig about the size of a small truck, and a small electronic cone will be driven into the ground.

Work will be carried out within the red rectangle and yellow circle shown in the map below
