Our Next Meeting
Barnet VCFSE Environmental Network

Thursday 17 March, 10.30 - 12noon

If you've already been to a Barnet VCFSE Environmental Network meeting then you'll automatically receive an invite and zoom link for our 13th on 17 March.

If you've not joined us yet, then do email Ellen. These are informal and informative networking sessions for those working in the Barnet Voluntary, Community, Faith & Social Enterprise (VCFSE) sector, where we can come together to discuss environmental issues in the Borough, and work out how we as a sector can make a difference.

This networking group will raise awareness of environmental projects that are happening in the Borough, help to establish partnerships and joint initiatives and seek funding opportunities.

If you have any topics you would like to raise/discuss at future meetings, do let Ellen know.

Online Event
Climate Change Savvy: Resilience for Person, Plate and Planet

It’s no longer gardening as usual and this session will demonstrate how by working more closely with the natural world one can build greater resilience for person, plate and planet overall. Or how to be Climate Change Savvy.

With a nod to the pre Victorian peasant gardens of yore, Kim Stoddart will explain how to grow fruit and vegetables productively in the face of increasing extremes of weather.

Thursday 31 March, 6pm

Food Waste Action Week

Food Waste Action Week (FWAW) is taking place from 7 to 14 March.
Led by WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme), the campaign will aim to incentivise individuals to reduce food waste in their homes by making the connection that food waste feeds climate change.

If you would like to support FWAW on social media and encourage people in your area to take part in the activities throughout the week, you can find all the tips and resources in the partner pack including materials for Instagram, Twitter and Facebook or get in touch with WRAP for more information.

Barnet's Sustainability Strategy

Anyone interested in taking part in one of the Sustainability Strategy Workshops being undertaken by the council in partnership with the Applied Negative Emissions Centre (ANEC) must register their interest by Sunday 6 March.

They will be holding separate engagement events with community groups, as well as residents, young people, businesses and partner organisations. This more formal engagement will provide a better opportunity for community groups to feed into the development of Barnet’s Sustainability Strategy.

All are encouraged to sign up via the link below, and as a thank you gesture, all community group attendees will be given a £40 voucher for your time.

Report and Event on the...
Importance of Community Food Growing

Report: Fringe Farming
Leading UK food and farming organisations are highlighting the potential of agroecological farming at urban edges to be part of a green economic recovery. The Fringe Farming report shows that climate-friendly market gardens produce numerous social, economic and ecological benefits and propose that these can help to meet existing government targets on issues from climate change, food access, to education and training.

Event: How community growers are carving out space in the city's food system
The creation of alternative food systems requires space to grow, cook and eat together, often in cities where there is competition for land. This FoodSHIFT 2030 webinar looks at projects in Wrocław, Poland and just over the border in Islington. Speakers will share their opportunities/challenges, as well as key lessons learned along the way.

Wednesday 9 March, 12 noon.

Update on the...
Tiny Forest

The Tiny Forest is now planted and it looks amazing. Six hundred trees and six huge bags of mulch went in in under two hours. The session with school kids in the morning was also brilliant and very heart warming.

What happens next?

First of all, remember that this is YOUR forest! We hope you will have time to come and visit and we will be organising regular events over the coming months. If you have any ideas about events we can organise around it, let us know.

We will publicise all of the above through this mailing list and through the GoodGym website.

Do keep in touch.

Daniel and Paul

Stop Press! Barnet Friends of the Earth, Vision for a Net Zero Carbon 2030

Over the past few months Barnet Friends of the Earth have created several briefing documents to help inform discussion and debate about how the borough can reach its net zero goals. One of them outlines our vision for a Net Zero Carbon 2030.

Take a read and let them know via the link below (use the ‘Action’ button on the right of the page) what you want Barnet to look like in 2030. They're especially keen to hear from other green groups in the borough so that they can share the great things everyone's up to, avoid any duplication and maybe link up on future projects. https://actionnetwork.org/campaigns/net-zero-barnet-briefing/
