June 18, 2026 A Generation Looking for Fathers As Father's Day approaches, 18.2 million children in America are grappling with their father’s absence instead of celebrating his presence. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that one in every four children in the United States lives without a biological, step, or adoptive father in the home. Throughout the Bible, God instructs His people to care for the fatherless. James 1:27 says, “Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” “That verse tells us that every Christian has the opportunity to address the number one social issue in our country, which is fatherlessness,” said Sean Teis, minister and founder of Life Factors Fatherless Ministry. With Father's Day just around the corner, God’s people have an opportunity to remember and serve the fatherless. However, many churches and individuals do not know where to start. Teis offers advice and resources for those who feel ill-equipped or uncertain about how to love the fatherless children, single moms, grandparents raising grandkids, and others affected by absent fathers in their communities. Gen Z is Returning to the Church. But What About the Elderly? While youth are returning to church in droves, the elderly are silently slipping away from the pews. Gen Z’s interest in Christianity is certainly news worth celebrating. Yet in the excitement of a youthful mission field, communicators can lose sight of a population just as desperate for hope: the Silent Generation and Boomers. Barna Group found that older adults are the only generation to experience decline in church attendance over the past 25 years, even as attendance has risen among Gen Z, Millennials, and Gen X. The generation closest to heaven is furthest from the church. Christian communicators are uniquely positioned to bring the Gospel to the elderly and mobilize younger generations to care for their elders. According to research from Edison and NPR, Americans ages 55 and older spend an average of 3 hours and 39 minutes a day listening to audio, with 56% of that time tuned in to traditional AM/FM radio. We compiled insights from NRB members into a practical guide for pastors, communicators, and individuals seeking to reach the elderly with hope through media and relationships. ‘Grace to You’: the Organic Growth of John MacArthur’s Media Ministry Jay Flowers was comfortable with his profession of Christian faith until he heard John MacArthur preach in chapel at Master’s College (now Master’s University) in 1987.“What did Jesus mean when He said, ‘Follow Me?’” MacArthur asked the students. “What does that look like?” MacArthur’s frank emphasis on obedience cut through the familiar “altar-call salvation” environment in which Flowers grew up. “He simply opened the Bible and taught, and that’s what I needed,” Flowers said. “I just remember sitting in the chapel and just realizing that there is so much more to this book, to Scripture.” In recent media appearances, NRB President & CEO Troy A. Miller discussed the growing interest in Christian media, the need for stronger biblical literacy and discipleship, and why faith still matters in the public square. He also reflected on America's Christian heritage, Gen Z's renewed interest in traditional values, and the responsibility of believers to live out their faith with courage and conviction.
