We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Tā Toby Curtis. The Board and staff of Te Māngai Pāho extend their sympathies to his whānau.

Tā Toby was on the board of Te Māngai Pāho from 1994 and held the position of Chair from 1997 to 2003. Tā Toby was with Te Māngai Pāho during a time of key milestone events including assuming funding responsibility for 20 iwi radio stations (later 21) in 1995, the 1999 landmark Waitangi tribunal spectrum case which found that the air waves could be used to protect and promote te reo Māori, and the Māori Television Service Act in 2003 when Te Māngai Pāho was heavily involved in funding content in preparation for the launch of the new television service.

While active in many fields, Tā Toby Curtis will be remembered by the Board and staff of Te Māngai Pāho for his staunch advocacy of te reo Māori, through his significant contributions to education and Māori media. Moe mai rā, e te rangatira.

Ngā Manako o Matariki

This year,  Aotearoa recognised Matariki with our first public holiday. The significance of this milestone was not lost on Te Māngai Pāho. Matariki is the first mātauranga Māori public holiday and this recognition represents a significant shift in our national identity.

This year, recognising the importance of what Tā Pou Temara called, “ …a moment in time”, we have reframed our SPE to reflect the themes of Matariki. Ngā Manako o Matariki sets out our plans and aspirations for the year ahead and how we plan to achieve our goals.
