Geotechnical investigations wrapped up
We have recently completed geotechical investigations as part of the current phase, which have supported our understanding of land and seabed conditions for an additional harbour crossing.
Land based investigations started late 2024, with geotechnical drilling in the harbour starting March this year. It’s the first time NZTA has undertaken geotechnical drilling in the Waitematā Harbour to this extent.
Investigations have included more than 130 boreholes, soil and groundwater sampling, and a broad cross section of survey techniques including mobile laser scanning, drone capture, use of data from previous projects to combine ~5,000,000 data points into a topographic model.
Findings have been consistent with expected ground conditions. The geotechnical investigations have fed iteratively into the design work that the project is progressing and helped form a robust level of design, understanding the engineering requirements and the risk profile associated with cost estimates and construction timeframes.
