Pavement construction underway south of Christine Place

Works underway between Sheepworld and Grimmers Bridge

Shoulder widening between Grimmers Bridge and Sheepworld (L.Phillips Road) is continuing this month. We're also continuing to build retaining walls on the northbound side of SH1, as shown in the image below.

Pavement construction is now underway and, once complete, we'll start installing the permanent side barrier on the northbound shoulder. These 'W-section' barriers protect vehicles from running off the road if drivers lose control.

From late-February state highway traffic will be shifted westwards onto the new pavement so southbound shoulder widening can commence between Christine Place and Grimmers Bridge.

Construction of turnaround bays at Sheepworld and Christine Place intersections will also get underway in February.

Once both sides of the highway are widened and retaining walls and side barriers completed, a widened centreline and flexible centre-wire median barrier will be installed.

We expect this section of the SH1 Dome Valley Safety Improvements project to be completed by August this year.

Works underway south of Wayby Valley Road

Additional temporary steel barriers have been installed to allow the shoulder widening and installation of underground services south of the Hoteo Bridge.

Once we have completed the necessary work on the northbound side we will then switch and begin work on the southbound side.

The project team have commenced installing underground services between Forestry Road and Waiwhiu Road.

Temporary speed limits

We receive regular feedback from customers asking why there is a reduced speed limit through this section on days where no works appear to be happening on site.

The reduced speed limits are in place due to the temporary steel safety barriers we have installed along the edge of the traffic lanes. The location of the barriers means there is currently no road shoulder and the traffic lanes are slightly narrower.

The temporary speed limits throughout the Dome Valley are as follows:

- 30km/hr when state highway traffic is under manual stop/go control (generally only during nightworks);

- 50km/hr when working behind the barriers, or when there are potential safety risks such as faded roadmarkings or pavement damage, which require nightworks to repair; and

- 70km/hr at all other times through the construction areas, due to the reduced road width.

To ensure the safety of all road users, including cyclists, reduced speed limits will remain in place until the works are complete.
