Good progress at Pohokura

Work that began in August to reinstate the road to two lanes at Pohokura by building a bridge over a damaged culvert, is on track to be completed early 2021.

Those who have travelled the route recently will have seen that one lane of the bridge is nearly complete. It will be operational by early November with stop/go in place and the temporary Bailey Bridge will be removed.

Thanks for continuing to take extra care while travelling through the site and sticking to the temporary speed limits.

Marco School students share stories of the Forgotten World Highway

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has commissioned consultants, Quality Tourism Development to work with our iwi partners, locals and tourism organisations to develop a wayfinding plan for the highway. The project aims to enhance the journey along the route.

A Zoom meeting was held with students from Marco School recently to get their input into the project. The team were delighted with the pupils’ enthusiasm and reported hearing some wonderful stories and comments, including an amusing tale of how the school got its name.

Sealing project to start this summer

We are now in the final stages of progressing consents required to seal the first two kilometres of the Tangarakau Gorge. We expect to be able to award the contract to our preferred local contractor shortly and start work this summer.

Meanwhile, we are designing the remaining 10 kilometres of unsealed road and undertaking investigations and designs for many of the other projects planned for the route including safety improvements, the Manawawiri culvert replacement and a preventative maintenance strategy.
