T2 lanes open on Monday

From Monday 11 January, the T2 Lanes on the CNC will be ready to use. You can use the T2 lanes if you have one or more passengers in your car. (You need to have two or more people in your vehicle including the driver - babies and children count, pets don't!). There are two T2 lanes southbound on the new CNC motorway:

  • The Tram Road On-Ramp T2 lane operates 24/7. It is also a freight lane which is open to trucks.
  • The CNC Motorway T2 lane will operate from 6am to 9am, in the right-hand lane, on weekday mornings. Signs will tell you when it is in operation.

Buses can use T2 lanes. Motorcycles are also allowed in this lane with or without a passenger.

New direct bus service and park & ride

The direct bus services from Waimakariri to central Christchurch, start Monday 11 January, and will be free for the first two weeks.

Metro’s new, fast and direct bus services to central Christchurch includes four morning trips from both Rangiora and Kaiapoi, and five afternoon trips back to each township. The new 91 Rangiora – City direct, and 92 Kaiapoi – to City direct bus services are supported by Park & Ride facilities.

Waimakariri District Council has added more Park & Ride facilities in Kaiapoi and Rangiora to allow local residents to take advantage of the new T2 lanes and direct buses. Locals can park their car or bike at the new facilities, then catch the bus or meet up with friends or colleagues to carpool.

Final asphalt surface and landscaping

Now much of this project is chip seal, but this is not the final surface. In spring 2021 we will apply a final low noise asphalt layer. It is industry best practice to apply a chip seal surface first, leave this to weather for a time before the final asphalt surface is applied.

The new CNC motorway surface has performed well since opening. It is the nature of all chip seal roads to lose chip for a while (several weeks) when new and especially in hot weather. At present we are continuing to sweep the road regularly.

Landscaping work along the shared path and motorway alignment is ongoing, including weed control and planting more trees and plants in the upcoming autumn season, April to September 2021.
