Long-term stabilisation work complete at Omoto
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and KiwiRail have completed stabilisation work on SH7 at the Omoto East landslide site, a key milestone to ensuring long-term resilience of this important link to the West Coast.
Installation of the shear pile retaining wall at the site (between Stillwater and Greymouth) commenced in February 2020, after the first stage to drain the slip surface was successfully completed late last year.
This stage of the project involved installing 86 piles in three rows through the slip below the railway line, to support the road and rail above.
A small crew of five was able to continue working safely through the five week COVID-19 Alert Level Four lock-down period, ensuring the essential remediation work was able to be completed prior to the onset of winter.
The last remaining piles were installed at the end of May.
There is still work to do to reinstate the site to what was there before. KiwiRail and Waka Kotahi continue to work together to complete restoration of the railway and SH7 at Omoto, connecting the West Coast and TranzAlpine passenger service.
In the meantime, SH7 at Omoto remains an active work site. Please follow all road signage and drive to the conditions.
The final stages of this project will involve making provisions for the reinstatement of utility services beneath the road, before the road and rail corridor access tracks can be reconstructed. This will get underway after winter, when weather conditions are more favourable for this type of work.
The remaining work is likely to resume in late September/October depending on weather conditions.
