Welcome to the June 2020 update for the SH10 Waipapa Corridor Improvements project.

This month we outline how we will respond to project delays caused by recent events and explain how much the scope of the project has grown since it was conceived.

Revised project timeframes

We are mindful of the community’s wishes to see the project finished as quickly as possible and we have worked with our contractor Downer to establish a revised construction programme.

We have managed to keep our Christmas completion date for the roundabout portion of the project, despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and unexpected delays that arose during the consenting process.

The rest of the works will be wrapped up by April 2021.

This is an ambitious programme that we are aiming to achieve with more resources and by working longer hours (including evenings). We are also planning to use an alternative road pavement which is quicker to build and more resistant to the effects of poor weather during construction.

We're getting bigger

There have been significant increases to the scope of the SH10 Waipapa Corridor Improvements project since the detailed business case was completed in 2018.

These scope changes were identified during the consultation, investigation, design and consenting phases of the project. For example, we are now:

  • building a bridge across the Whiriwhiritoa Stream on Maritime Lane, along with the associated paving and stormwater infrastructure
  • replacing and improving the entire stormwater system for the town
  • carrying out additional works on Waipapa Road, Waipapa Loop Road and the extension of Maritime Lane
  • constructing a new carpark on Waipapa Loop Road.

Coming up this month

This month work will continue on upgrading and installing new stormwater systems and moving power, phone and internet cables into shared service trenches at different areas of the site. Some nightwork will be necessary to minimise disruption where utilities cross the road. Downer will give local residents advance notice of this.

We’ll also be starting to widen the pavement on the eastern side of SH10 as we’ll need this space to realign traffic during the construction of the roundabout.

Work will be starting to extend the road paving off Klinac Lane, which will eventually link with Martime Lane. This work will cause minimal disruption and traffic management will be in place.

Narrowing SH10

We’ll be narrowing traffic lanes slightly on SH10 south of the intersection with Waipapa Road later this month. Water-filled safety barriers will be installed along the edge of the highway to provide a safer space for our team to work on the road shoulders.

As people adjust to the narrower traffic lanes there may be some congestion during peak travel times. Please reduce your speed and drive with care through the area.

The barriers and narrower road corridor will be in place for the duration of the project. Traffic management staff will be in place to help people travelling along the state highway on foot or bikes. Footpaths on Skippers Lane will not be affected.

Construction about to start on roundabouts at Puketona and Kawakawa

Earlier this week Associate Transport Minister Shane Jones turned the first sods on roundabouts to be constructed at Puketona and Kawakawa as part of the New Zealand Upgrade Programme, a $12 billion investment in infrastructure across the country.

Property and resource consents were obtained some time ago for these projects and we are ready to start work.

Construction will begin on the SH10/11 Puketona Junction Intersection Improvements project in July and is due for completion in March 2021.

Works commence on the SH1/11 Kawakawa Intersection Improvements project this month and we expect construction to take around 12 months.

These projects will provide jobs to Northlanders and, along with the improvements at Waipapa, will deliver better access to the Twin Coast Discovery Route, enhancing tourism opportunities and regional freight movements by improving safety and journey time reliability, particularly at peak seasonal times.
