How to Utilize the Rule of Three in Your Next Presentation
Hi there! Welcome to Ansley Insights, a monthly-ish email from yours truly and Ansley Corporate Entertainment.
Let's talk about one of my favorite tools in both presenting and comedy: The Rule of Three.
Why three? It's simple.
- People recognize patterns quickly.
- Three is easy to remember - for both you and your audience.
- And it just works!
When presenting, structuring your content around three points or ideas makes it easier for your audience to follow and remember your message.
In stories, there are three parts: the beginning, middle, and end.
And in comedy, three sets up then shatters a pattern to create a punchline.
Here's an example from when I first started in stand-up comedy:
"Our next comedian has been busy planning her wedding. She's registered at (1) Target, (2) Belk, and (3) Match .com! Please welcome... Lauren Ansley"
See how the punchline breaks expectations? That's the magic of three!
Next time you’re presenting:
- Share three key points.
- Tell a case study story in three parts.
- Or sprinkle in a (suitable-for-work) joke to keep your audience engaged.

Hosted the 7th Graduation of the Women's Stand-Up Comedy Class of Charlotte - 6 more students performed their very own, brand-new comedy sets after successfully completing the 6-week course. Our next class kicks off in March 2025. Interested? Join the interest list here.
