Co-designing suicide prevention interventions with international students

An Australian study found that co-design is a culturally responsive way to develop a digital suicide prevention app with international students. Students helped shape the app from the start, and reported better mental health knowledge, stronger social connection and a greater sense of belonging within the student community.

Social vulnerability and suicide in Australia


A social vulnerability index was used to investigate relationships between suicide and social vulnerability in Australian communities.  The current index is not suitable as a direct measure for a community’s risk of suicide, but some individual domains were associated with increased risk.

The Australian Government will invest $13.9 million to expand 13YARN. This will be used to support a 24/7 crisis line for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and develop a new culturally safe text-based crisis service.

Free online training: Including family, friends and carers in mental health practice

A new online training from Everymind is available to help primary care, allied health and mental health professionals strengthen carer-inclusive approaches. Funded by the Department of Communities and Justice, the training focuses on effective engagement with family, friends and carers - the people who often provide essential emotional and practical support to people experiencing mental health concerns or suicidal distress.
