Seaview’s Noho not sitting on its laurels as it takes its chairs to the world

A Message from Wellington Water
"Kia Ora Koutou
We sincerely apologise for the continuing odour that is coming from the Seaview Wastewater Treatment Plant. We continue to receive complaints from the public on the odour and we acknowledge the unpleasantness and distress this has on residents and businesses.
Reports we have received from the community is the odour remains very high and is worse on some days that it is on others.
We wish to assure you that the plant is currently stable with no new issues, so the unpredictability of odour levels is because of weather conditions and the direction of the wind.
We are working with and monitoring the situation closely with Veolia who are responsible for the operation of the plant.
The backlog of sludge in the process is reducing, but it will take time for the biological processes to remove the bacteria that is causing the increased odour.
We are working as fast as possible and doing all that we can to bring odour levels down. We have suspended work on all planned maintenance and upgrade activities help alleviate odour levels. We are also exploring options to improve odour levels, including installing an additional odour neutraliser.
We appreciate the odour level is not acceptable and regret it is taking longer than we would like to minimise impacts on the community.
We are working through the situation and acknowledge this is concerning, frustrating, and upsetting for everyone given it has been a long-term issue that has got worse in recent weeks."
Biofilter Air Distribution System Renewal Update
Wellington Water is making excellent progress on replacing the biofilter air distribution system, having met the first deadline set by Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) in an abatement notice. This system is crucial for treating odours at the plant, as air passes through a media bed where microbes break down odour-causing compounds.
As part of the Odour Treatment Renewal Project, this work addresses ongoing odour complaints. With the first three of six cells replaced by the 4 October deadline, Wellington Water is on track to complete the project ahead of the 1 November deadline.

Bioengineering Trial Begins New Phase Along Te Awa Kairangi
As part of Te Wai Takamori o Te Awa Kairangi, Greater Wellington are looking to transition 7.7 hectares of exotic willows to natives.
A bioengineering trial was started three years ago along Te Awa Kairangi / Hutt River, at Belmont, west of the Kennedy Good Bridge. Riverbank defences were built with woody debris, and willow poles were planted. Debris fences were used to stabilise the river edge, slow water speed and trap silt, resulting in a suitable growing environment for native plants.
The next stage of the trial has begun - planting natives. This will help find out which native plant species, planting methodologies and planting periods will work best.
We’re all excited to begin watching the native trees flourish alongside the established willows, creating a diverse and resilient riparian environment.
