Faces of Waverley Library

Jim McElroy

This is Jim, a long-time Waverley resident and member of the library. Before he retired, Jim was the producer of some of the most iconic films in Australian history, including Picnic at Hanging Rock and The Year of Living Dangerously, and he worked closely with figures like Mel Gibson, Graham Kennedy, and Peter Weir. Jim is currently writing his memoirs from his favourite spot inside the library, and he says that it’s easily the best place to work in the whole of Waverley. If you want a great place to read a book, work from home, study, or just to sit down and relax and meet people like Jim, pop into the library any day of the week and we’d be happy to see you.

Treasures of the Stack

While books with movable parts have been around since the 1200s, these were almost always scholarly works. Useful, but not exactly fun. The pop up book as we know it today is relatively new, with the publication of the Daily Express Children's Annual Number 1 "with pictures that spring up in model form" in 1929. Another four Daily Express Children’s Annuals were produced. These are considered to be “true” pop-up books (though the name would not be coined until later in the 1930s) because the 3D images can be viewed from any angle, not just the front of the book.
