Friends of Aileu Newsletter No. 65, June 2025

Welcome

Merri-bek City Council, Hume City Council and the Friends of Aileu acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people, including the Gunung-Willam-Balluk clan in Hume, as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands and waterways in the areas now known as Merri-bek and Hume. We pay respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging, as well as to other First Nations communities who significantly contribute to the life of the area.

It is a pleasure to be bringing you news about the friendship relationship between the Merri-bek and Hume City Councils and their communities and the Timor-Leste municipality of Aileu and its people.

Timor-Leste's President Dr José Ramos Horta (Left) and Prime Minister Mr Xanana Gusmão (Right) try out new locally produced furniture, styled after the twisted-root symbol of Aileu, while Aileu Municipal President Mr João Bosco dos Santos and others look on

Community to community friendships: Working together - Building on our strengths

This year we are marking significant anniversaries of several important events in the journey of friendship between Australia and Timor-Leste, being:

  • 25 years since the formal commencement on 4 May 2000 of the friendship relationship with Aileu, and also the Darebin-Yarra friendship with Baucau and the Port Phillip friendship with Suai
  • 30 years since the 18 on board the Tasi Diak arrived in Darwin on 30 May 1995 after their heroic escape from occupied Timor-Leste
  • 50 years since the first East Timorese refugees landed in Darwin on the Lloyd Bakke on 26 August 1975, on the Macdili on 28 August and on the few subsequent air evacuations in the wake of the brief civil war and the devastating Indonesian invasion

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us at Coburg Town Hall on 6 May to celebrate 25 years of friendship and solidarity between our communities in Australia and the Timor-Leste municipalities and communities of Aileu, Baucau and Suai.

The evening began with a powerful and moving Welcome to Country by Uncle Bill Nicholson.

We were honoured to be joined by Kirsty Sword-Gusmão AO as special guest and José Pires as MC and extend our sincere thanks to them and panel members Glenda Lasslett, Glenyys Romanes, and Megs Alston for sharing their insights and stories of friendship.

A special thank you to Merri-bek, Hume, Darebin, Yarra, and Port Phillip Councils - whose support over the 25 years has been indispensable.

About Us

Friends of Aileu is the friendship relationship between Merri-bek City Council and Hume City Council, along with their communities, and the Timor-Leste municipality of Aileu and its people. The relationship, first established in the year 2000, reflects and builds on the enduring links between the people of Australia and East Timor.

These links developed over decades of community solidarity with the people of East Timor through periods of war and conflict, the liberation struggle, international peacekeeping and United Nations administration.

Our friendship continues to evolve as the people of the now independent nation of Timor-Leste chart their own future, and as our respective communities deal with different local issues and face shared regional and global challenges.
