Re-sealing northbound lanes Waimakariri Bridge

From Wednesday 23 September, we will be resurfacing the existing northbound lanes on the Waimakariri Bridge. Similar to the work on the southbound lanes, traffic on the bridge will move over to the middle lanes while we do this work. The work will take about two weeks to complete.

Chaneys on-ramp will be closed during this work and there will be no left turn from Main North Road to Marshland Road.

Drivers wishing to exit at the Tram Road Off-ramp will need to be in the left-hand lane before the bridge.

There will be a temporary 60 km/h speed limit in place. SH1 northbound traffic should expect some delays, especially during the evening peak.

We expect to shift southbound traffic back to the ‘old’ freshly resealed lanes on Sunday night 20 September.

A more detailed update should be available on our website by tomorrow.

Below: New southbound lanes, with the southbound traffic on the new middle lanes.

Reminder - Grimseys/Prestons Intersection lane closure

The southbound lane on Grimseys Road, between Dunbarton Street and Prestons Road will be closed until Monday 21 September.  This will allow us to complete the road tie-ins and construct the kerb around the northeast corner.

Southbound traffic on Grimseys Road heading towards Prestons Road will be diverted via Lowry Avenue and Main North Road. The lane closure does not affect traffic on Prestons Road and northbound traffic on Grimseys Road.

Two bus stops will be closed on Grimseys Road: at the corner with Prestons Road and near Exton Street. The bus will continue to stop on Grimseys Road near Dunbarton Street and Mulberry Place.

Gantry installation SH1 - on going

The gantry installations are progressing well,

The full night work schedule and project update can be found here.

With lane reductions, lane closures and traffic diverted, movements will be slow, please expect delays at night from about 10pm till 5am on gantry install nights. When traffic is reduced to one lane, there will be a 60km/h speed limit in place. High winds or very poor weather could move or extend these dates.

Our full SH1 closure is scheduled for 30 September when all motorway traffic (north and southbound) will be diverted overnight.
