Safety improvement work gets underway

Tēnā koutou,

Work to make State Highway 5 (SH5) between Wairakei and SH38 safer will get underway during the week commencing 24 June.

We're starting work on the northern end of the route, between the SH38/SH5 intersection and Butcher Rd. Here we'll be installing roadside safety barriers to help stop run-off-road crashes, a wide centreline to help prevent head-on crashes and a wider shoulder to give drivers more room to recover if they veer off the road. We'll also be improving signs and road markings along the route.

This work will be carried out by Splice Construction on behalf of the NZ Transport Agency and is expected to be finished during the second half of 2020. We'll work to minimise the impact on access to properties along the route and to keep traffic moving as smoothly as possible.

We plan to start making safety improvements to the central part of the route (around Mihi and the Waikato River) and at the southern end at Wairakei late 2019/early 2020, funding permitting.

The project is being delivered as part of the Safe Network Programme, a collaborative, prioritised programme of proven safety interventions on high-risk routes across New Zealand.

If you have any queries or concerns about construction, please contact Jarrod Edwards from Splice Construction on 022 185 6871. For all other queries please contact me on the details below.

Ngā mihi,

Craig
