Making progress

We're working hard to get the Pito-One to Melling section of Te Ara Tupua finished and want to give you an update on where we're at with the project.

As we head into winter, our focus is to finish the surfacing of the cycleway and work around the underpasses and pump stations as soon as possible.

Over the past few months, more of the cycleway has receive its final surface. We're working to tie the shared pathway sections at the Hutt Rd and McKenzie Ave areas, plus continuing to complete the surfacing along the main cycleway. Fulton Hogan are progressing well and have provided an update of work on the go below.

We also removed the temporary traffic management from State Highway 2 in April, following the installation of the new barrier.

Moving forward, there may be one or two occasions where temporary traffic management will be needed again. This will only be for minor works and for a short period of time.

We're also looking at mid-August for an opening – watch this space!

Thank you for your patience as we approach the end of this project.

Formation of the Hutt Valley illustrated

We've been working with mana whenua designer and artist Len Hetet will help to share the story of Te Awakairangi through several designs that will adorn the Pito-One to Melling section of Te Ara Tupua once completed later this year.

Len's designs will be incorporated into the two underpasses and walls below the Dowse Interchange, which the cycleway runs beside. They will depict the story of Ngāke and the creation of Tupua Horo Nuku.

We will be testing how these will be installed soon. An example of the designs can be seen here.

With the northern end of the Pito-One to Melling cycleway  approaching completion, we have reopened Parliament Street to two-way traffic.

Traffic management will remain in place along Parliament Street to ensure site safety. There may be times when a temporary lane closure will be needed however, this will be for no longer than a few days.

Work in this area are set to be completed in the next two months.

Fulton Hogan update

Petone Park & Ride

Works are now complete in the Petone Park & Ride car park. A new one way system has been incorporated into the design, which allows for the new shared path beside the station platform.

A bike shelter for train commuters who travel by bike is also planned to be installed at the station later this year.

Hutt Road and Parliament Street

Construction of the pump stations on Hutt Road is ongoing. These facilities will help discharge rain water from the underpasses into the storm water network.

Work has been extended, please follow the temporary traffic management which is in place on the Hutt Road, near to where the underpasses are. This is to ensure the safety of our crews and other road users.

The anti-graffiti paint application has been weather dependent and is ongoing at Petone and Normandale underpasses and along the retaining walls.

Next to SH2

Surfacing works continue throughout May along the cycleway (the main part of Pito-One to Melling).

Right now, we're up to surfacing the main cycleway next to the Dowse Interchange. Once this is complete, we'll be turning our attention to the installation of CCTV, lighting, signage, and line marking.

We're also working to tie the shared pathway sections in around the Hutt Rd/McKenzie Ave and Parliament Street/Normandale Road bridge areas.
