One catholic church (small c)

We are currently at the National Catholic Education Conference learning from and with our ecumenical colleagues. It was wonderful to join Eucharistic mass with the highlight being 410 children from across the schools in the Cairns diocese forming a mass choir. I must admit to a twinge of jealousy as the upcoming Australian Conference on Lutheran Education (ACLE) will be held during school holidays so we won’t be able to have the same level of student involvement.

One of my favourite parts of the Nicene Creed is saying, “one holy catholic and apostolic Church,” because I love that word catholic with a small c and all it implies. Whenever I say that clause, I feel swaddled up in belonging to a community spread across the globe and throughout all time. It is our unity in Christ that enables us to say “our Father” in the Lord’s Prayer.

We are in the final run up to ACLE, and look forward to seeing you there. Joining the Lutheran community will be representatives from Catholic and Christian schools. We will also be welcoming some of our international Lutheran colleagues. So ACLE will be a small c catholic gathering, welcoming everyone and with something for everyone. And in the apostolic sense, we will be sent afterwards to share that belonging out into our schools, early childhood services, regional offices and the world. See you soon.

During his days in Adelaide and Port Lincoln, Schürmann kept a diary in German documenting his experience with the British colonists, the different German groups and First Nations peoples.
