SH1 Mangamuka Gorge slip repairs – December 2024 updateKia ora koutou, After 854 days, we are excited to announce the reopening of SH1 through Mangamuka Gorge to all road users, just in time for Christmas! To everyone involved in bringing this project to this point, including the community for your support, thank you. We are deeply grateful for all you have done. When you travel the road, you'll notice there's plenty of new sites to see. While much of the extensive repair work is hidden underground, including piles and anchors, above ground the road has a new asphalt surface, capping beams, guardrails, and a retaining wall with a beautiful mural showcasing the incredible effort workers have made restoring this vital piece of road. The summit now also features picnic tables where you can take a break and enjoy the view. From all the crew at Mangamuka Gorge, we wish you a safe and merry holiday season. |

Post-reopening work: January - April 2025We will return on the week of January 13 to complete final anchor work on the remaining slips. The road will remain open during this period, and the team will do their best to minimise disruptions. Planned temporary traffic management, such as stop/go or traffic lights, will be in place. The work is expected to continue until April 2025. We ask that you help keep everyone safe by driving with care and taking the time to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the gorge. Slip A7 – Road surface reinstatement and barrier installation are complete. Anchor work will be completed in the new year. |
