Cliff houses
Not just the purview of Enid Blyton novels and smugglers, houses have been built nestled into the sandstone cliffs along Waverley's coastline for many years. Throughout the Great Depression, shanty towns and temporary humpies sprang up on the Crown Land along Sydney's coast. These makeshift shelters and cave cities were often uncomfortable, poorly constructed, and had little in the way of sanitation or hygiene systems. A house that broke the mould was James Martin's rock house located on the coastline between Waverley Cemetery and Bondi Beach. By 1939 Martin had been living in the house for 10 years, and had the creature comforts of a balcony, a pet cat, and a water collection system. A sailor by trade, Martin had chosen the cliff location from the deck of a passing freighter in 1939.
