Chair YogaThis gentle yoga class will be guided by Erin Griffin who loves nothing more than creating opportunities for people to slow down, be kind and listen to their bodies. Yoga is a powerful self-care practice that connects us back to ourselves, to our breath, and to this moment. Erin will offer a simple chair yoga class that includes elements of moving, breathing and stillness. The class will be a combination of seated and standing postures with plenty of options so you can choose what feels right for you and your body. No yoga experience required. Places are limited. Cups for CarersCarers WA is excited to introduce our regional initiative, ‘Cups for Carers’. King’s Park Walking EventCarers WA is partnering with the Heart Foundation to host a walking group event in Kings Park. Feel Relaxed with Our Wellbeing WebinarsYou are invited to a very special edition of self-care for carers. The pillars of wellness series will take place over three mornings, in the cosiness of your own home, via Zoom. Together we will explore simple ways to work with our own cyclical nature and tips and tricks to keep motivated when life is asking a lot of us. Expect to finish the sessions feeling nurtured and nourished. You'll need a comfortable space and if possible, privacy so you can really relax. Bring along a tasty drink and something to write with, plus anything else that feels comforting to you. EAAA Digital Learning Application on Elder Abuse Consultation Workshops Elder Abuse Action Australia (EAAA) is developing a digital learning application centred on violence against older people in Australia. They are seeking input from professionals interacting with older community members to ensure the educational material is effective. Feedback is particularly sought from health workers, in-home care providers, violence support workers, social workers, allied health professionals, NDIS providers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers, welfare agency workers, LGBTQIA+ support services, and CALD support services. The goal is to empower frontline workers to support older people experiencing abuse and understand the needs and experiences of these workers. National Carer StrategyAustralia's unpaid carers are urged to contribute their experiences and suggestions to shape the National Carer Strategy, designed to provide better support and services to unpaid carers across Australia. The strategy is set to be unveiled by the end of the year and will be informed by the needs and experiences of those providing unpaid support. Face-to-face consultations in WA have been held in metropolitan, regional, and remote locations to ensure a diverse range of experiences are taken into account. This isn't just about data collection, but a significant step towards empowering our community. Siblings of Individuals with Autism, ADHD and Down Syndrome Young carers aged between 16 - 30 years are invited to participate in a groundbreaking research project. This study, conducted by Curtin University and the Telethon Kids Institute, seeks to understand the unique experiences of siblings of individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and Down Syndrome. An Investigation into the Communication Barriers Faced by Older Adults with Both Sensory and Cognitive ImpairmentThis research aims to explore the communication barriers experienced by older adults with both sensory and cognitive impairments, and how these barriers impact their quality of life. Carers over the age of 18, who provide any level of care to a person over 65 with any degree of sensory and cognitive impairment and still living at home, are invited to participate. News & UpdatesCommunity Engagement Team's Busy Month on the Expo CircuitThis month the Carers WA Community Engagement team were out and about participating in several expos and events to raise awareness for unpaid carers. The team started at the Ageing Well Expo, held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre in early August. Shortly after, the team attended the Rural Health West Aboriginal Health Conference in Fremantle where they spoke with healthcare professionals about Carers WA supports and referral pathways. They then represented Carers WA at the RACEPC Communicate Aged Care Symposium, which focused on the experiences of residents in care facilities. Carers WA participated as exhibitors, contributing to the dialogue about successes and areas for improvement in aged care. The month concluded in Bunbury at a special service provider event sharing information about relevant support for carers and the process for organisations to become carer-friendly employers. Carers WA PO Box 8160 PERTH BC, WA 6849 Cheryl’s StoryFor seven years, Cheryl has been a devoted carer to her husband, who lives with young onset dementia and frontal lobe dementia. The path to his diagnosis was a complex one, filled with uncertainty and loneliness. With no nursing background, Cheryl found herself navigating a new world of caring for her husband after a seven-week hospital stay. Despite hardships, they continue to find joy, and with the support of Carers WA, Cheryl learnt she wasn’t alone. Cheryl says, “We’ve all got a strength in us, but we don’t always know how to bring that out. And I’ve learnt through Carers WA that that’s what you can do and be a better person.” To read more, click here. Young Carer Bursary 2025The Young Carer Bursary Program supports young carers to continue with their education and reduce their need to undertake paid work at the same time as their study and caring duties. The program offers 1,592 bursaries of $3,768 each year to assist with education needs and resources. The 2025 Young Carer Bursary applications will open in late September 2024.
