Takitimu North Link project pānui

14 June 2022

As construction ramps up on Stage One of the Takitimu North Link project we are issuing this stakeholder briefing to keep you up to speed with the latest on and off site.

Take a flight across the site

Have a look at this three-minute flight over the project site, flying from Smiths Farm to Te Rangituanehu / Minden – it’s a great view of progress to date with commentary from Environmental Manager Stephanie Kirk.

High interest from the community

It was great to see so many people come along to the drop-in event at Bethlehem Hall on Saturday 28 May. About 320 local people attended and there was a great buzz with lots of interest in what’s happening across the project. We’ll be compiling a Q&A with the most common questions and feeding this into the next phase of our communications.

Work starts at Wairoa Road Overbridge

We’ve reached an exciting phase with work starting on the bridge at Wairoa Road, this is the first of eight major structures on the project. Piling is underway and the bridge will take around 12 months to build.

My position on the Takitimu North Link Project is to work within the Step Change team to co-develop and deliver technical training to Te Paerangi for the Plant Supply Initiative.

The initiative aims to provide positive opportunities to improve the well-being and economic  growth of our local communities under the Sustainable Social Outcomes.

I look forward to working with and connecting to our local communities and mana whenua.

Visiting the site at Minden Road

Site visit - April 2022

In April 2022 members of Te Paerangi and Pirirākau visited the construction site. This was a great opportunity to see the progress to date at Bethlehem, Wairoa Road and Te Rangituanehu / Minden Road.

Project communications

As construction ramps up, interest in the project is high and some of our neighbours to the project have noted increased passers-by coming to have a look at what’s happening. We are working hard in comms and engagement to get information out to project neighbours, the wider community and our stakeholders, as well as carry out engagement including site visits, work with schools, and the community. Here are a few links to recent publications:

  • Contractor’s newsletter – this is a new monthly update from contractors Fulton Hogan and HEB Joint Venture, this is targeted at project neighbours and the community to share progress on construction and what is coming up on site. Read the May edition here
  • SH2 Waihī to Tauranga Corridor newsletter – this is produced every six to eight weeks by Waka Kotahi and incorporates updates on all projects across the corridor, including Takitimu North Link Stage One and Two, Waihī to Ōmokoroa safety improvements, our annual maintenance programme and more. Read the May edition here
  • We regularly issue media releases and updates to local papers to enable us to reach a wider audience – you can view these here.
  • Regular updates are shared on the Waikato / BOP Facebook page here. You can follow the page to see these updates. All information related to the Takitimu North Link project is also shared with administrators of the Te Paerangi Facebook page.
  • All resources and publications can be found here on the www.nzta.govt.nz/takitimunorth website, any of this content is able to be shared.

Project concept design available on website

We have published a new concept design of the entire project to help people understand the whole project and its location. This is marked 'concept design' while the detailed design is being completed.

Activity sheet for tamariki

Most tamariki / children just love diggers. But there's a lot more learning opportunities that come out of building the Takitimu North Link project. Here is our first activity sheet to support engagement with schools in the coming months.

If you would like some printed copies for your whānau or kura, please contact Anna Foster to arrange, email anna.foster@nzta.govt.nz

What’s coming up – Girls with Hi Vis

Nearly 50 girls from local schools will be visiting the Takitimu North Link site to learn about careers in construction as part of the Connexis Infrastructure Training initiative. Rangatahi from Te Wharekura o Mauao, Ōtumoetai College, Aquinas College and Tauranga Girls’ College have registered pupils to participate.
