Welcome to the second edition of the Marlborough state highway planned roadworks update.

This weekly newsletter will keep you informed about what’s happening across the region’s state highway network so you can plan ahead.

State highway mowing on Monday 29 September

Mowing will be underway across the Marlborough region on State Highway 1, State Highway 6 and State Highway 62 Rapaura Road on Monday 29 September. While this will have little impact on road users, please ensure you slow down when travelling past our contractors carrying out this work.

 

 

SH1 Picton to Christchurch

SH1 Lindens Crossing (between Picton and Koromiko)

Work to rebuild State Highway 1 at Lindens Crossing, between Picton and Koromiko begins on Monday 29 September for eight weeks until Friday 17 October. Work will be carried out 24/7 (no work on weekends). During work hours stop/go traffic management will be in place. Expect delays of up to 10 minutes at this site.

SH1 Riverlands - near the truck stop

Various work including chipsealing, sweeping and line marking and high shoulder removal will be underway from Monday 29 September until Wednesday 8 October (no work on Sunday 5 October), between 6:30am and 6:30pm. Stop/go traffic management will be in place during work hours. Expect short delays.

SH1 North and south of the Waiau Toa/Clarence River

Chipsealing work will be carried out at multiple sites from Wednesday 1 to Friday 3 October. Stop/go traffic management and a 30km/h temporary speed limit will be in place. Expect short delays.

 

 

Upcoming work on SH1 South of Ward from 6 October

A road rebuild is planned for a 600-metre stretch of State Highway 1, south of Ward from Monday 6 until Friday 24 October

From Mondays to Saturdays stop/go traffic management will be in place between 7am and 6pm. A 30 km/h temporary speed limit will remain in place 24/7. Plan ahead for delays of up to 10 minutes at this site during work hours.

With work also underway on State Highway 1 south of Picton (as outlined above) and at Hawkswood in Canterbury (commencing soon), drivers travelling between Christchurch and Picton should allow an extra 40 minutes for their journeys during October. This is especially important for drivers with Picton ferry bookings.

SH6 Blenheim to Nelson

SH6 Canvastown

Rock scaling work will be undertaken near Canvastown on Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 October between 8am and 4:30pm. Stop/go traffic management will be in place when material is removed from site. Expect short delays.

SH6 Whangamoa Saddle

Resilience works originally scheduled to resume on Monday 22 September were postponed due to weather. This work will now commence on Monday 29 September.

Work will be carried out from Mondays to Fridays but stop/go traffic management and a 30km/h reduced speed limit will be in place 24/7 for the safety of all road users. There are five sites to complete as part of this project, however only one site will be worked on at a time to minimise disruption. Plan ahead for delays of up to 10 minutes when travelling between Nelson and Blenheim while this work is underway.

SH63 Renwick to Kawatiri Junction

SH63 Andersons Bridge

Work continues to replace Andersons Bridge on SH63 following the June/July 2025 storm events. Stop/go traffic management and a 30km/h reduced speed limit remains in place 24/7 at this site. Plan ahead for short delays.

 

 

Upcoming work on SH63 Wairau Valley East from 6 October

Work to rebuild a 1.3 kilometre section of State Highway 63, on the Renwick side of the Wairau Valley township, will begin on Monday, 6 October until Friday 12 December.

Contractors will remove the top layer of the road, lay new gravel, and then apply a new chipseal road surface. This will provide a more stable and improved road surface that will require less maintenance and repairs in the future.

From Mondays to Saturdays stop/go traffic management will be in place between 7am and 6pm. A 30 km/h temporary speed limit will remain in place 24/7.

Plan ahead for delays of up to 10 minutes at this site during work hours.
