LETTER

Hello friends,

ED

We’ve been sharing the various covers of our new 40th issue online so you may have seen them (and thanks for the kind words and gazillion reposts). The wait is nearly over for this printed 300+ page marvel to hit stores. Out next week! ■ A great and timely story in the issue is the life & work profile of British artist ED ATKINS. He’s known for his monumental, daunting video works that can be somewhat unpleasant to look at. “My favourite stuff is often not made by particularly nice people, nor is it particularly good for you to look at or spend time with,” he tells writer ELIOT HAWORTH. ■ The piece, however, is particularly interesting to read – and for your pleasure it’s already available online. ■ ATKINS’s big solo show at Tate Britain opened earlier this week and is on until 25 August. PRADA FRAMES

More to read: on the eve of the fourth iteration of their symposium PRADA FRAMES, during Salone del Mobile in Milan, designers FORMAFANTASMA talk about moving to Milan, running a series of talks on subjects as obscure as refrigeration technology (which changed humanity’s food consumption drastically) and how to exchange ideas on a train. ■ In terms of predicting what their collaborator Mrs. PRADA will be drawn to in this weekend’s talks, they say: “She’s very unpredictable, I have to say. So I’m sure she’ll surprise us.” It’s a cheerful conversation. ■ We’ll be reporting on the event in days to come (see you there!) and in next week’s newsletter.

SHADE APP

It’s so sunny outside – a colleague recommends super handy online service shademap.app to see where to expect sunshine or shade, now or soon. Indispensable for all your outdoor endeavours.

WOOL PRIZE

Huge congratulations to DURAN LANTINK for winning this year’s Woolmark Prize. ■ DURAN’s star really keeps rising and rising, and rightly so – he keeps pushing the boundaries of fashion at a time when a lot of clothes are dull dull dull dull dull. Well deserved! ■ (Portrait from February 2023 when DURAN participated in a work-in-progress Fantastic Man podcast idea.)

NOAH DAVIS

Thank you all for your recent London art recommendations. There’s so much on at the moment! ■ The absolute top tip must be NOAH DAVIS at the Barbican Centre – the American painter who made a lot of stunning works packed with meaning, all the while initiating LA’s Underground Museum, and passed away way too young 10 years ago. Go see! ■ It’s on until 11 May and worth every second of your visit.

There’s no diary like one’s camera roll, and on 4 February 2007 it looks like we went for lunch with the legendary gentle journalist RICHARD BUCKLEY. Nice car too! ■ RICHARD, who edited ‘Vogue Hommes International’ for an inspiring stretch of time while managing a loving household with TOM FORD, is seen holding Fantastic Man No. 5 – the issue must have come out that week. ■ I can’t remember what he talked about that day, but it must have been a mix of fatherly industry advice and fun gossip. We miss RICHARD.

That was then – and we’ll be back next week.
With love,
