1. Our last big concrete pour

Story
Story

Our last big concrete pour on the project was completed on Wednesday 3 February. 720 tonnes of concrete was poured to form the deck that will take expressway traffic over the Powells Road Underpass. Because of the size of the pour, staff were on site from 1am – and concrete was pumped and poured from 2am. Early starts ensure a consistent supply of concrete and make sure it is poured before the heat of the day. Weather was a challenge, with thick fog enveloping the site around dawn.

2. Panels lifted into place at East West Link Bridge

Textured black concrete panels have been bolted in place to finish the retaining wall under the East West Link Bridge at Tamahere. Two cranes were required to lift panels and place them under the bridge beams. A standard crane lifted each panel off the transporter, rotated it and placed it temporarily on the outside of the bridge. Then a specialist franna crane lifted it and transported it to the final position under the bridge.

3. Pavements team roll into Tamahere

Our Hi-Lab team is laying two layers of road pavement alongside SH1 and under the bridges at Tamahere. The video shows bottom dumper trucks laying the rock blend, and a stabiliser mixing rock with cement near the Cambridge Road Bridge, before the surface is rolled and compacted.

4. New Link Road kerbed and sealed

700m of the new Link Road from Birchwood Lane is now kerbed and sealed. This photo shows the gully section where two major culverts take gully streams under the road. Some 50,000 cubic metres of fill have been placed and compacted on top of the culverts to form the road embankment.

5. Building 77km of flexible barrier

The posts that hold up our wire rope barriers on the Hamilton section sit in sleeves embedded in the road surface. On this project, we’ve tested and approved a system to drive the sleeves into the road pavement using a hydraulic ram, rather than drilling holes and concreting them. This will be a big time-saver because we have 77km of flexible barrier to install.
