Shared path now open

We’ve wrapped up work on the Waikanae Bridge shared path and it’s now open to the public.

The new shared path was requested by the community when we asked for feedback on the design for the old State Highway. Now completed, it will help make crossing Waikanae River safer for everyone, providing separation between people driving, and those walking or biking.

The clip-on path was installed over the last few months, beginning in mid-January. Last month, the road over the bridge was reopened in both directions while we finished the final work to complete the path.

Old SH1 now part of the local road network

The Waikanae Bridge shared path was the final major component of our work to prepare the old SH1 route between Mackays Crossing and Peka Peka to be handed over to Kāpiti Coast District Council. The road is no longer required as a state highway, as the Expressway provides a safe, efficient route for highway journeys. A range of improvements were agreed between us and Council as part of the agreement to revoke the road's state highway status.

Now that the old highway has been officially transferred, the Kāpiti community have a great asset with improvements that will help all road users have safer journeys within the region. Thank you all for your patience during the installation and the earlier stages of the corridor improvement projects.

Have your say on the Kāpiti Expressway speed limit

We’re proposing a new speed limit on the Kāpiti Expressway, from north of the Poplar Avenue interchange at Raumati, to south of the Ōtaki northern interchange.

This section of the Kāpiti Expressway currently has a speed limit of 100km/h. We’re keen to hear what you think about our proposal to increase the speed limit to 110km/h.

We’re committed to delivering new and safe roads that help people get where they need to go, efficiently and safely. The section of Kāpiti Expressway being consulted on was designed and constructed to a high safety standard, which means that we can consider an increased speed limit.

Consultation is a legal requirement for all proposals to set new permanent speed limits. We'll consider your feedback alongside the safety assessment of the road to make our decision.
