Te Ahu a Turanga – Manawatū Tararua Highway

Project update

9 September 2024

Kia ora and welcome to this newsletter, which provides information on a proposal to toll Te Ahu a Turanga: Manawatū Tararua Highway – the 11.5km route to reconnect the Manawatū, Tararua District, Hawke’s Bay and northern Wairarapa, replacing the closed State Highway 3 Manawatū Gorge route.

Consultation opens on tolling proposal for new highway

NZTA Waka Kotahi is seeking feedback on a proposal to toll the new Te Ahu a Turanga: Manawatū Tararua Highway.

Every time a new state highway is built in New Zealand, NZTA carries out an assessment to see if it meets the criteria to be tolled.

NZTA has assessed Te Ahu a Turanga’s suitability as a tolled road and is now seeking public feedback on a tolling scheme for the 11.5km highway, with separate proposed rates for light and heavy vehicles.

The new highway will provide a much safer, resilient and efficient route between the communities of Ashhurst and Woodville. The  road will decrease travel times and vehicles operating costs while providing a strategic transport link for freight and businesses.

Consultation closes at 5pm on Monday 7 October.

See below for a map of highway and table of proposed tolling rates

These prices would be the same rate for 24-hours a day, and are in 2024 dollars.

Find out more about the proposal and provide your feedback online by visiting: nzta.govt.nz/teahuaturanga-tolling

Brochures with freepost submission forms are also available at your local library or council office.

Share your feedback with us by 5pm, Monday 7 October 2024.

All submissions and feedback collected via the public consultation will be summarised to the Minister of Transport. This will provide insights into the level of community support for the tolling scheme in the region.

The final decision on whether or not to toll each road rests with Cabinet on the recommendation of the Minister of Transport.
