Decision on Kaukapakapa School variable speed limit

Earlier this year we formally consulted on a proposed variable speed limit outside Kaukapakapa School on State Highway 16.  We want to make roads safer for everyone and variable speed limits are one way we can help make roads safer for children outside of schools.

We have considered all submissions received during consultation and want to thank everyone who gave us feedback.

We now want to let you know that we have made our decision on the speed limit change and will be implementing the proposed variable speed limit at peak school traffic times.

The variable speed limit will be:

•  40km/h at peak school traffic times being;

  • 35 minutes before the start of school until the start of school, and
  • 20 minutes at the end of school, beginning no earlier than five minutes before the end of school.
  • it may also operate for 10 minutes at any other time when there is school-related activity.

The new variable speed limit will take effect from Monday 24 August 2020.

Electronic signs displaying speed limit

Electronic signs will be located on SH16 outside the school at:

  • 190m southeast of Opoto Place, and
  • 160m northwest of Opoto Place.

These signs will display the 40km/h speed limit when the variable speed limit is active.

At all other times the speed limit will be 50km/h and the electronic signs will be blank.

You can find more information on this speed review, including a map and our consultation summary report, on our webpage.
