The SH1 Mangamuka Gorge slip site, with concrete barriers in place. SH1 Mangamuka Gorge has reopenedKia ora koutou, State Highway 1 through Mangamuka Gorge reopened to traffic at 2pm today (Friday 2 May). Crews have worked over the past 2.5 days to clear soil and vegetation from Tuesday’s slip and secure the hillside. Concrete barriers have been installed on the road shoulder at the slip site to stop any remaining material that may fall during future weather events from reaching the road and requiring road or lane closures. SH1 through the site is now open in both directions with temporary speed limits in place. Further work will be required on these slips, as well as new areas affected by recent weather and the final clean up at the original recovery worksites. This will be carried out under temporary traffic management, including shoulder closures, reduced speed limits and stop/go controls where needed. We understand any closure of the gorge is disruptive and we appreciate your patience as crews worked to get the road reopened as soon as were able to do so safely. Drive with care, allow extra time for your journeys, follow signage and any instructions you receive and treat roadworkers with kindness and respect as they work to keep the state highway network open and safe.
