Ōtaki to north of Levin project update – August 2020

Since our last newsletter we’ve been talking with the community about proposed SH57 safety improvements, and to property owners in the new highway corridor about our recent work.

We'd like to let you know about community events we're hosting over the next few weeks to update you on the new highway and get your feedback.

New highway draft preferred alignment announced

Investigation and initial concept design work has been progressing on the new highway in recent months to develop a draft preferred alignment for the new Ōtaki to north of Levin highway, within the 300m wide preferred corridor announced in December 2018.

The new highway will:

  • Improve safety, with less deaths and serious injuries
  • Increase resilience of the roading network
  • Support growth through improved movement of people and freight
  • Integrate with the local network including supporting access to walking and cycling
  • Enhance efficiency, making journey times more reliable.

Draft preferred alignment and connections to the new highway

Story

Earlier this month we started meeting with property owners within the draft preferred alignment area, and we’d now like to share this work with the wider community.

The draft preferred alignment for the new highway has been assessed as the technically preferred option from our work to date across multiple fields, balancing project objectives, environmental and social impacts and ability to implement.

Technical specialists have conducted investigations in multiple areas such as ecology, heritage, social, noise, and engineering, assessing options for where the new highway could be placed within the preferred corridor as well as considering connections and local roads.

Following consultation and further technical work Waka Kotahi will consider refinements to the draft preferred alignment and work towards finalising the preferred alignment in late 2021.

SH57 safety improvements engagement

In July, we hosted a series of drop-in information sessions on the planned SH57 safety improvements. These improvements will make the corridor safer in the meantime, while work progresses to deliver the new Ōtaki to north of Levin highway within the decade.

About 250 locals attended these events, which were an opportunity to hear more about proposed safety improvements and provide feedback.

Feedback closed on 10 August and we are continuing to analyse the results. Input from the community will help fine tune proposed safety improvements.

Proposed solutions, proven to improve safety and reduce deaths and serious injuries, included a new roundabout at the SH57/Queen St intersection, to slow approaching traffic and make it easier to choose the right time to enter the intersection. Other safety improvements planned for SH57 include installing side barriers to stretches of the road and wide centrelines.  Side barriers can reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured in crashes by up to 30%.

Construction is expected to begin this summer and take approximately 18-24 months to complete.

We also asked for the community’s thoughts on the current speeds on SH57, between the SH1 intersection and Shannon. After processing feedback and further technical work we will let you know next steps on the speed review, which would include formal consultation.
