Then and now – Rook Reserve

After a long winter, locals and Aucklanders are set to enjoy a great new community space with the recent opening of the upgraded Rook Reserve.

The new all-purpose playground which includes a multi-use court, hopscotch and four square games will keep little and big kids entertained for hours. Seating around the playground not only provides a place to rest and watch friends and family play but doubles up as a skating or skateboarding facility.

People have one more reason to get out of the car onto the new local pathways which connect communities with places of work across State Highway 18 with many more connections currently being built.

As part of a creating a healthier city, the reserve includes a stormwater pond which is used to treat run off from the motorway. Making the natural environment great for people to use and look at is important and there’ll be hundreds of additional plants which will be incorporated into the reserve. We want the plants to thrive, so we plant them in the winter, and we’ll be back next year to complete this work.

We’d love to hear how you or your family and friends are enjoying the space - get in touch with us via northerncorridor@nzta.govt.nz

A story of the region through artwork

Local artist Graham Tipene has worked in partnership with mana whenua and Waka Kotahi to create an enduring legacy of artwork which help tell the story of the region.

For those travelling south, you’ll soon be greeted by a 12m tall pou whenua (land post) on McClymonts Road Bridge along with panels wrapped around the pier.

Both the pou and panels are carved in weathering steel and the panels reflect the Puhoro design which has links to water and the creation of life. In this setting, they represent the coming together of people, resources and minds. Ensuring that these artworks can be enjoyed any time of the day, lights will help illuminate the designs after sunset.

More travel options for people on foot, bike or scooter

Recent years have seen an increase in Aucklanders taking to their bikes and leaving their cars at home and this was especially noticeable during the COVID-19 lockdowns when individuals and families got out of the house and enjoyed riding around their neighbourhoods.

We’re building 7km of local connections across the Northern Corridor Improvements project which will help locals access places of work, education or to simply enjoy an afternoon with family and friends.

The paths won’t all be ready at the same time so we’re opening these up in stages as smaller sections are complete, ensuring locals can enjoy the benefits of a safe and growing cycling network as soon as possible.

Pictured is the recently completed 360m section adjacent to SH18 which runs from Alexandra Stream Underpass to Paul Matthews Road which users are already out enjoying.

Plan ahead for travel in the new year

Please plan your journey on State Highway 1 over the weekend of 15 and 16 January as we will be doing essential work between Upper Harbour Highway and Greville Road. A full closure will be in place in both directions from 7pm on Saturday 15 until 10am on Sunday 15 January 2022.

We’ll be pouring concrete on the new Rosedale Road motorway bridge which is necessary so we can continue our work on upgrading the Northern Motorway.

We expect delays will cause a longer journey time, so don’t get caught out and please plan ahead if you need to travel through the area. Thank you for your understanding.

Happy summer holidays

Whether you’re already packing your bags to head off and explore outside of the Auckland region or simply looking forward to getting together at home with whanau and friends, the Northern Corridor Improvements project team wishes you all a safe and happy festive season.

Like all of New Zealand, we’ve navigated the stops and starts of another extraordinary year and we’ll be closing for a break on Thursday 23 December and are looking forward to resuming works on Monday 10 January 2022.

Next year, there is lots to look forward to with the opening of the Northern Busway extension from Constellation to Albany, which will provide greater public transport options not only on the North Shore but across the Waitematā Harbour and into the city too. We’ll also be continuing work on the SH1 to SH18 underpass which is a key piece of infrastructure to complete the Western Ring Route, opening up access for freight and vehicles with the airport.

Please take care on the roads and plan your journey before setting off, don’t forget to slip, slop, slap if out in the sun and most importantly, we hope you have a great summer break and a well-deserved rest.
