Project update | He pānui

Despite the wet weather in April, our crews continued to progress at the SH22 and Jesmond Road intersection.  We completed the installation of new service connections and finished undergrounding of the power lines, working closely and successfully alongside Chorus, Counties Power, and First Gas to update this essential infrastructure as part of the project.

On Monday 4 May, we began asphalting work to lay down the new road surface.  This work is taking place overnight to minimise disruption to road users during the day.

We began asphalting on the southern side of the intersection on the fourth leg of the intersection (the start of the access road to the new station).  Once this is complete, safety barriers will be removed on SH22 and we will lay new asphalt along the southern (westbound) side of SH22.

As the work progresses, you'll start to notice changes to the road layout.  Traffic will be shifted onto the newly paved southern side of the intersection, allowing us to begin work on Jesmond Road and the northern (eastbound) side of SH22.

During overnight works, one lane on SH22 will be closed, with a stop/go operation in place to manage two-way traffic.  A temporary 30 km/h speed limit will apply overnight.

Jesmond Road will be also closed at the SH22 intersection during these overnight works.  The newly signalised Victoria Street intersection will be the detour for people wanting to enter or exit Jesmond Road overnight when our works are underway.

During daytime hours, SH22 will remain open in both directions. However, please expect road layout changes as work continues.  During the day, Jesmond Road will remain open at the SH22 intersection for left-in/left out movements only, with the 'no right turn' restriction remaining in place until the interim intersection upgrade is completed in June.

A temporary 50 km/h speed limit will remain in place through the work site during daytime hours.

Correction | Whakatika

In our last project update, an incorrect statement was made in relation to speed limits that was not picked up prior to publishing.

That statement was: "... under the new Setting of Speed Limits Rule 2024, 70km/h is no longer an option available for setting new speed limits or changing existing ones."

This statement was not correct.

The existing 80km/h section of SH22 between Burberry Road and the northern end of Paerata village is classified as a 'peri-urban' road.  Under the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limits 2024, the range of speed limits available for roads classified as 'peri-urban' is between 50 and 80km/h.

We apologise for this error.
